Mariota was just a generational talent and Helfrich didnt recruit or develop him

I mean, we have a comparable in our own division with Gus and Cam. Not sure Gus has recruited, and damn sure hasn't developed, an above average SEC QB since Cam.

Not outside realm of possibility that a similar situation took place elsewhere (note: not saying it did. I think Helfrich is very smart and has a great offensive mind. Probably a great OC just not a good HC).

Couldn't be much worse than the rest the D gets when we constantly go 3 and out.

This year they tried another transfer but it didnt work out. They put in freshman Justin Herbert and he goea out there looking like he's been in the system for 2-3 yrs...

I see where you're coming from, but Cam was a different situation. 1 year, perfect fit in the system, one of the best college QB's ever.

Mariota was at Oregon for 3 years, and while a lot of Helfrich's success can be attributed to Mariota, remember that helfrich was there for 3 years even before Mariota, with 2 other QB's who played well. He's also got TWO freshman QB's who played well for him this past season. He's done a hell of a lot more than Gus.

I agree with you 100%. Our team is built for a Helfrich offense and hope we give him an interview.

It's true. This board, who have likely collectively watched little to no Oregon football, are experts on what happened in the program and have confirmed all Helfrich did was play Candy Crush for the entire time he was there while everyone else did the work

I didn't even know that until that Oregon poster that's been here since we played them in 2011 posted it.

That's true, but he'd gone the grad transfer route at QB each of the previous two seasons. Has to be a reason for that...my guess would be he didn't feel great about the recruitment or development of the HS QBs he had on his roster (sounds a lot like Gus to me).

He had only 1 grad transfer, 2015 - Vernon Adams. And everyone wanted him. Every team goes the transfer route every once in a while - your own team did it fairly recently.

Great. Then we'll become A&M. No thanks. You can't run 80-90 plays every game and expect your defense to be remotely fresh by November

Dakota Prukop was a grad transfer started for Oregon this season

He got benched. That's 2 years in a row.

Bama did, indeed do it, but not every year since McCarron left like Oregon did since Mariota left.

I missed that, you got me there. Oregon now has 2 freshman QB's and seems to be set for the next few years. He patched it up for a year then figured it out (halfway through this season). Anyway I fail to see the point you're trying to make as he was OC for Masoli, Darron Thomas, and Mariota over a period of 5 years.

Everywhere he's been minus Colorado they have been a record setting offense. I don't think he would be a bad hire at all

I don't see Helfrich being successful for different reasons. The team isn't built to run that offense. He requires a mobile and accurate QB. I understand there are mobile QBs on the roster that balled out in high school (Scott) but they're still unknown on the college level. Right now, like it or not, Etling is probably the starter heading into next season. I think if Sark puts the bottle down the offense could be pretty dangerous under him. Before his alcohol problems, he ran some pretty damn strong offenses.

You think the alcohol just up and appeared over night? He was an alcoholic when his offenses were potent. He wasn't fired for performance issues.

IMO I hope it's Cutty Shark or Matt Canada as OC.

I meant it as in his alcohol problems getting him fired. That was my point. He ran some pretty dangerous offenses before getting fired for being an alcoholic.

Everything he does is anti-defense and would put Aranda behind an 8-ball. I just can't get on board with a guy that calls plays like he's playing Playstation and going for 2 all the time. No thanks.

First of all, he's not the head coach anymore. He can't arbitrarily decide to go for 2 without O agreeing to it.
