Let's not go full hyperbole and act like books 7-11 weren't heaping piles of shite.

Let's also try and avoid going full on hyperbole and act like all 5 books you mentioned were "heaping piles of shite" - book 7 was quite good at a minimum.

Even book 9, which was where the story began to get really bogged down, has one of the greatest scenes in the whole series with rand and Nyn and everyone around shadar logoth (not going to risk a spoiler but if you know the series well enough you should know what I'm talking about)

Book 10 was boring but 11 was a turn in the right direction.

Let's also not try and pretend like Martin is batting at 5 for 5 with his installments of ASOIAF.

I think my honest ranking would include about 5 of the 1st 7 as very good to excellent two average to good on, then 8-11 probably includes 2 bad and 2 that were somewhere in the average - good range. I've only read the Sanderson books once so its tough to remember but all were pretty good and the last one was an excellent series wrap (basically just a battle lasting the entire book I think).

So out of a 14 book fantasy series WoT has a pretty solid average working for itself which is pretty comparable to ASOIAF.

Just started Book 1 of the series. Seems like it reall subscribes to classic fantasy tropes so I’m interested to see if that changes. Besides every major chick being a major biotch, been pretty entertained so far.

Well if the bitchy women are a major issue for you then you best just put the book down, cause it only gets worse.

Episodes 1 and 2 have a director! Uta Briesawitz.

She's directed episodes of Stranger Things, Westworld (S2E8, what most people consider the best of S2), Jessica Jones etc. Has an Emmy Nom for cinemotagraphy for Hung and was a cinematographer on The Wire.

Strong resume. Its happening.

It doesn't, but it also came out in 1990. So in some ways, it help to define the genre.

I will watch the series but gave up on the books at the end of book 10.

Ya, I think people can often forget just how young the genre really is. Although its certainly a traditional archetypal fantasy story - it does do some interesting things with some of the things Mat does, the brief look we get into the Age of Legends, the general time / setting implications which I think helped further the genre.

Anyone seen # of episodes or anything like that? I know they are going to be an hour long.

No. The only episodes that are officially written are Eps1 and 2, which were written in order to get the series greenlit.

The rest are being written by now by the writing team that was assembled pretty recently. So we have no idea.

i enjoyed the series waited impatiently for em to come out. and cant wait to see what they come up with. A big advantage for us old guys been so long since I read the first few of them I dont hardly remember much of them so it will be fun to watch then reread. I would also love to see Anne McCaffrey's Pern books on film

You should really pick up the last three books that Sanderson helped write. You won't be disappointed.

Very minor update on this.

We know the names of 5 of the first 6 episodes, and the title of Episode 6 seems to suggest that the first 5 episodes would be the entirety of Eye of the World and that Episode 6 would be the beginning of book 2, The Great Hunt. This suggests a 10 episode, two books per season slate, but we honestly have no idea.

The showrunner is also currently in Prague presumably doing location scouting, Prague would make an excellent Caemlyn.

It also came out today that production should begin on September 9.

If they follow the GoT model, then we should see a casting director and casting start in April.

5 hour long episodes is plenty of time - he has an incredibly vivid descriptive style that doesn't need a lot of TV time to convey. Plus the books didn't start getting to 1200 pages till the middle and can be cut down to some degree.

I assume everyone in this thread knows all the spoilers but I'd bet something like

1 - up through winter night
2 - escape over white bridge and into baerleon
3 - shadar logoth and getting separated
4 - journey to Caemlyn, possibly through the ways
5 - the blight / eye of the world

On the one hand I’m happy we won’t have two seasons of country bumpkin denial rand. On the other hand that also feels really really fast and that some things will be left off. I’m on book 4 now and hope to stay ahead of the game.

Episode 1: Leavetaking
Episode 2: Shadow's Waiting
Episode 3: A Place of Safety
Episode 4: The Dragon Reborn

Episode 2 would be Baerlon up until Shadar Logoth
Episode 3 would be Shadar Logoth, the separation, the boys on the road to Caemlyn, Perrin and Egwene with the Tinkers and in the Stedding and meeting ELyas.
Episode 4 would be Perrin and Egwene's escape from the Whitecloaks, Rand and Mat in Caemlyn, meeting Elayne etal, Rand seeing Logain (Logain's character is going to be enhanced for the series), reuniting.
Episode 5 would be The Ways, Fal Dara, the blight, and the Eye.
Episode 6 would be the beginning of tGH.
