Probably The Grapes Of Wrath.

For a more modern selection, I'd probably say The Orphan Master's Son.

Checks out.

Seriously though, really great book (and Trilogy)

For me though, Memories of Ice from Malazan Book of the Fallen. My favorite book from my favorite series of all time.

Close behind though would be in no particular order:

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress --Heinlein
Dune --Herbert
Once an Eagle --Myrer
The Road to Serfdom --Hayek
Man, Economy, and State --Rothbard (not so much fun to read, but a pillar of my socioeconomic views)

I would put Deadhouse Gates as my #1 in terms of excitement and enjoyment. Maybe my favorite book in the genre with Memories of Ice is right up there though. The 3 book stretch of Robert Jordan from Shadow Rising, Fires of Heaven and Lord of Chaos should be mentioned. Shadow Rising being the standalone book that is probably my favorite.

Hey, I'm just impressed that someone else on here has read the series.

The passages with him pranking the blind roommate are amazing.

Another book I’d throw out there is Kazou Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go.

It was one of my summer reading choices for AP English back in high school. Turned out I liked the book so I bought the other two and read them on my own.

The Firm

First book I ever read that was not part of a school assignment.

Those are awesome. My favorites are when he lights a match behind the donkey as a child and when he's serving in the military.

I'm reading this now but it hasn't grabbed me yet (I'm on Book III Chapter 8). Not really a fan of these loooooooong quotes and sometimes it's hard to tell who's speaking. I'm reading the P-V translation.

Read everything from Moby Dick to War and Peace to The Great Gatsby to East of Eden and the best novel I’ve ever read is Catch 22.
