Looking to switch to a Tom Clancy novel. I have Patriot Games and the Hunt for Red October. I've seen both movies. Which one would the board recommend?

Start with Patriot Games.
You want to read them in order so you don't ruin the earlier books.

This. Rainbow Six was probably my favorite

800 pages…does it keep your attention?

Yes, it's very good.
His best work is Cardinal of the Kremlin, but it contains spoilers for earlier books.

I like this one a lot. It goes into a lot of spy craft details that I found really interesting.

Patriot games? Yes, absolutely. Its pretty non-stop. Excellent story. Significantly better than the movie.

The novel, The Sum of All Fears, is great. The movie butchered it.

1. Red Storm Rising
2. The Hunt for Red October
3. Without Remorse
Haven't read Cardinal of the Kremlin yet.

Clancy and war-game designer Larry Bond were a good team. I remember a softcover version of this book being passed around in college among friends. As soon as i got my turn i tore through it and handed it off to a lucky reader. Great book and nothing like his other stories.

The Hunt for Red October may be my favorite novel of all time. When I read it back in the 80s, I was in the Navy stationed on a sub tender so it was like I was living it. I love that book. The movie paled in comparison.

You could read that one first. It's a prequel.

Based on what you’ve read, I would go Clear And Present Danger and then Sum Of All Fears.
Cardinal In The Kremlin is the book after Red October but I find it to be very dry compared to the other books
Edit -
Misread the post… start with Patriot Games, read Red October, then skip to Clear And Present Danger.

It would be close between The Hunt for Red October and this one for the Ryan books, with perhaps Without Remorse coming off as the best "one off" within that universe. On some days, I think Without Remorse might be his best overall novel.
But, on most days I think it is Red Storm Rising. A true "one off" in that it takes place in an alternate timeline from all the Ryan books and is independent of all of them. Yes, you can see a Jack Ryan prototype in there, but if you can get past this, it is the best long novel I have ever read. Gripping. I didn't do anything but read this book one weekend during undergrad.

I enjoyed Without Remorse.

Same here. I ended up skipping all of my classes until I finished it.

I think the right thing is the jack Ryan books in order, then rainbow six, then without remorse, then red storm rising
