There are 2 I'd recommend that I haven't seen listed thus far
Armor - John Steakley
Basically imagine if there was more action in star ship troopers, and this was combined with the dark tones of war from the forever war. Soldiers in mech suits on a barren planet fighting giant ants and discussing the psychological impact of war. Keep in mind that after around the first hundred pages you switch characters to what seems a completely unrelated location and person. People give the book crap for that but the parts with Felix over come it

Space Viking - H. Beam Piper
Dude's phiance gets killed, sells everything he owns to get a space ship and go after the guy. Ends up raiding planets (including using nukes on them) that are at various stages of society (IE compareable to present day, space faring, etc), to finance what ultimately becomes a sort of empire for him. Less deep psychologically than armor but still pretty good

If you haven't read the rest of the Dune series after the first book, I'd highly recommend all the ones Frank Herbert wrote. Don't bother with the rest.

I'd also recommend the Three Body Problem trilogy.

Heroes Die - Matthew Woodring Stover

Both these series are great.

I think this may be the first time I've seen the Heroes Die series (Acts of Caine) mentioned on these boards, and it's awesome. It's one of those situations where I'm not sure how Stover hasn't been more successful.

It is young adultish, but the Unwind Series by Neal Shusterman is great. He builds a world after the USA engages in a second Civil War. There’s 4 books in the series. A brief synopsis:
quote:

It takes place in the United States in the near future. After the Second Civil War or the Heartland War, was fought over abortion, a compromise was reached, allowing parents to sign an order for their children between the ages of 13 and 18 to be unwound—taken to "harvest camps" and having their body parts harvested for later use. The reasoning was that since 99.44% of the body had to be used (the other 0.56% are vestigial organs), unwinds did not technically die because their individual body parts lived on. In addition to unwinding, parents who are unable to raise their children to age 13 for retroactive abortion have the option to "stork" their child by leaving it on another family's porch. If they don't get caught, the "storked" baby then becomes the other family's responsibility.

I'm very partial to short stories so I'd recommend "We Can Remember it For You Wholesale" from his early stuff and "The Minority Report" collection including Minority Report among other stories.

If you want perhaps his first great breakout then maybe "The Man in the High Castle". Other worthwhile reads include "A Scanner Darkly" and "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch"

I was not a fan of Area X - Southern Reach Trilogy. I finished it hoping it would come together and the idea was really good. But, it just never did.

One of the rare times where the movie was infinitely better.

Haven’t read that one, but American War is another novel set after a second Civil War that I highly recommend.

quote:

Omar El Akkad’s debut novel, “American War,” is an unlikely mash-up of unsparing war reporting and plot elements familiar to readers of the recent young-adult dystopian series “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent.” From these incongruous ingredients, El Akkad has fashioned a surprisingly powerful novel — one that creates as haunting a postapocalyptic universe as Cormac McCarthy did in “The Road” (2006), and as devastating a look at the fallout that national events have on an American family as Philip Roth did in “The Plot Against America” (2004).

Great pick, hadn't thought of Farmer in a while. He tends to get overlooked but I really liked Riverworld and World of Tiers.
