If anybody is looking for a trippy standalone light read I just finished Water Moon and enjoyed it

About a chick who runs her dad’s pawn shop which exists in a different dimension and takes in peoples past regrets. Her dad goes missing and she goes on an Alice in wonderland type trip through this realm to find him finding out secrets of her world along the way. Pretty entertaining. I was looking for something exactly like this after finished 3k pages of Shelby foote’s civil war trilogy lol

I finished Expeditionary Force: Ground State today. That was quite the 4-month journey. Now I guess have to play the waiting game like everyone else.

Next up is There Is No Antimemetics Division. So far it’s pretty weird, in a good way.

Finished Empire of the Vampire trilogy. Loved it. Sex scenes were a bit much sometimes but it every book was great. On to finishing Carl

It's not really BAD... it just didn't strike me like the first one did. In reading reddit on it, some people REALLY like it and some people don't. Hopefully you'll enjoy it! Definitely don't not read it based on my experience. I was also sort of ready to get into a different series. I might go back to it in the future and try it again.

I'm currently on the epilogue of Children of Ruin. I wouldn't recommend you going back to it. It's very predictable. The second half was quite a slog. I doubt that I continue the series unless I'm completely out of other options to read.

The evolved squid just didn’t do it for me like the spiders. Also really disliked the alien group mind thingy… but damn that was some serious body horror in the first part when it started inhabiting the humans.

I know several pages back James Islington's 2 trilogies were talked about. Was thinking about making these my next fantasy read once i finish some of Denis Johnson's stuff. Without going back and digging how were these?

Also curious about Islington. Not on Kindule Unlimited, so I'd actually have to purchase the kindle versions. Just want to make sure they're good.

Also: love me some Denis Jonson. I don't think I've read anything he put out since Tree of Smoke. Might have to dig back in.

James Islington's 2 trilogies

I read them last year and recommend both.

The Licanius trilogy is complete. It’s more traditional fantasy. Cool characters, magic system, and world-building.

There are two books of the Hierarchy series so far. The most recent one released in Nov 2025. I believe he has four planned. It has some fantasy elements, but I think it leans more sci-fi compared to Licanius.

Buffalo Hunter Hunter

I'm about halfway through this book. It is extremely slow paced. It's interesting, but I find I can only read 10 or so pages before I put it down for the night.

It cracks me up how the book switches from the Indian's story to the pastor talking about how he meant to save all the sausages he received so they will last the week, but ate them all at once.

I got around to reading The Only Good Indians, which is another Stephen Graham Jones book. I think I liked it better than Buffalo Hunter Hunter. Quite a bit faster paced and way more horror-esque.

Nearly done with the second half of Magician by Raymond Feist. I've really enjoyed it, and I'm not sure why I hadn't heard more about the series.

I'm going to read The ONnly Good Indians at some point. My TBR list is pretty long.

I'm in book two of the Bloodsworn Saga and enjoying it pretty good.Things starting to get real interesting wtth the Gods. Love the different creatures and magic aspects but not having to learn a magic system.

The first couple series are legit, Feist was pretty big back in the 80s and early 90s. He just milked the series too much and it became super repetitive so he kinda disappeared.

But the Riftwar and Empire trilogy's are quite good, and Serpent war saga is solid. After that I got bored quick and stopped.

Late 80s me would probably have had him second behind Glen Cook as my favorite fantasy guy of that time period.

I was hoping CoR was going to be a return to form of CoT. I mean, I'm going to read it anyway, but boo

I was just looking at score averages on goodreads and the like, and it seems like it falls off pretty hard. A lot of people seemed like the finale, but he also did a lot of guest authors too which usually isn't a great sign.

Wait, nevermind. I already read CoR. I’m waiting on Children of Strife. I’ve always been terrible with book titles

The ending ruined the whole book for me. It wasn’t my cup of tea I guess.

A wolf sets out on an epic journey of revenge in this one-of-a-kind dark fantasy—the long-awaited second novel from the author of The Library at Mount Char.

The wolf Blacktail is faithful to his Forest God, but in these times, faith is not enough. His world is besieged by men. Soon his territory will be overrun, and then there will be nowhere left to go. When his mate, a house dog, is killed, Blacktail rebels. He invades the house of her owners, seeking vengeance.

Blacktail’s fury catches the notice of an ancient and terrible feline witch, who makes an offer. What if Blacktail could end the human race responsible for the death of his family and for the destruction of the natural world, altogether? To do so, Blacktail must find and wake the Forest God. Only He might stand against the plague of men. Blacktail knows that his north woods are dwindling to nothing. He sees no other choice.

As Blacktail journeys farther from his wild home and deeper into the world of man, he encounters strangers—animal, mortal, and otherworldly—who, for their own reasons, want to help Blacktail rid the world of humans. Along the way, it becomes clear that he is more than just a wolf. The Forest God is sleeping, yes. But what will be the price of waking him?

Just read this on a whim based purely on your recommendation. I wish the denouement had run for another 5-10 pages to give a bit more closure, but regardless, I enjoyed it quite a bit
