I just finished the first 3 books. Great series, love how they wrapped everything up at the end.
How do the next 4 books compare? I was planning on checking something else out before starting the next books. Thanks

Next 4 are more character driven than plot driven. I love the two main characters Wax and Wayne. After book 6 I’d pause and ask if you want to dive into the rest of Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere. All his books are somewhat connected and after 6 it benefits if you read some of his other stuff.

Amazingly.
The next set takes place generations later. Sanderson said he wanted to play with what such a world might look like around the dawn of the industrial revolution. Also, Wayne is one of my favorite Sanderson characters (if not the favorite). If you loved the first 3, you will do yourself a disservice by not jumping into the next ones while the world is still fresh in your mind.

The Lost Metal is by far my favorite book not in Stormlight. I like Wayne and Marsh more than most people in Stormlight as well.
Definitely read the rest. Then enter the cosmere and a whole new world.

I’m in the minority but much prefer Era 2 to Era 1. Better writing and much better characters.
As others have said…if you want to get into the entire Cosmere you may want to read some of Stormlight and some other books before finishing Era 2.
You don’t have to though.

So storm light is connected to mistborn? Never knew

Sanderson has a shared universe called the "Cosmere" which includes books in Mistborn, Stormlight Archive, Elantris, etc. General advice is to read the Cosmere books in publication order (including novellas) the first time through. With Mistborn, you could read up to book 6 (BoM) before any real Cosmere connections become significant.

I love era 2. I'm currently finishing up my second read-through of it. Wayne is easily my favorite Cosmere character. Era 2 is less "fantasy" than Era 1 but way better character building.

This. If you are listening to the audiobooks, Wayne's narration by Michael Kramer is f'n amazing.

Yes, gp had a good breakdown above.
As the books go on there are increasingly more connections. Original Mistborn doesn't have a lot. The first few books of Stormlight don't have much that is apparent or needed to know.
But they do start connecting to some degree.

The Wax and Wayne series is really good but if you go straight into it expecting more of what you saw in Era 1 it will be a shock. Alloy of Law is good but you can kinda tell he was originally going to make it a one-off. Books 2-4 are great. Bands of Mourning is one of my favorites.

After reading it a couple of years back it jumped to one of my all time favorite series. It's brilliant from start to finish

They are completely different, and they are worth your time. It's more of a cyberpunk western feel that builds in scope with each book. While I personally like the initial trilogy better, both are absolutely fantastic.

Yes, originally Era 2 was just a writing exercise for him, but he liked the Characters so much he decided to write the entire book, which was going to be a standalone. But again he liked Wax and Wayne so much he decided to make it an entire Era.
What is now going to be Era 3 (set in an 1980s-ish time era) was the original planned Era 2.

I don't think you're really in a minority with that take, era 2 is much better to me. And by far his best characters.

I originally had trouble making it past the first few chapters of Era 2, started, stopped, then started again a few months later. I think I was burned out after reading Stormlight Archives and Era 1 right before. Once I got in to it I thought it was much better than Era 1. The stakes aren't as high but the characters are a lot more entertaining.

Good God, I'm not sure if that chart helps or makes it more confusing.

Your post above is a potential spoiler for both Stormlight and Mistborn.

I like Era 1 of Mistborn better but Era 2 is pretty great.
I’ll definitely give it a chance but I’m skeptical of a 1980s setting for Era 3.

Yeah it's daunting to newbies when you see the scope of the Cosmere. As you get more into it then it will make more sense and realize what Sanderson is building.
As I mentioned, I'd recommend publication order. Sanderson is very intentional in the order that he is writing books for it to make sense. Also this allows you to pickup the Cosmere references/easter eggs in Stormlight.

How
Edit: If you're referring to the title of Era 3...that's literally the title of the Era 3 trilogy that he announced and has openly talked about, with no spoiler warning himself. But I can delete it.
