Anyone read the book series? I have seen bits and pieces of the TV show and have a little bit of familiarity with it. Going to have some time this summer and thinking of giving the books a shot.

Any thoughts?

First 3 are awesome, one of the best runs in fantasy. 4 and 5 are still solid to good but not really up to the same level IMO.

Series won't ever be finished though, so if that will annoy you may want to just find some other great series to read instead.

Books are great. started on them before the show actually. That being said now due to the show and how long its been for the next book ill prolly wont read the next book whenever it comes out.

But the books were great.

He is old and it has been like 11 years since he finished the last one and is still working on it. He doesnt seem to know how to wrap it up to his satisfaction.

Still uncertain as to when the next book is coming and then he still has to write the final one.

I think the first three are probably worth reading. Plus if you like those there is tons of other really good stuff in the genre you could chexk out

Look, the books are great especially the first 3, and there are a lot of differences between the books and the show.

I've been reading them since 2000, long before the show. I really don't even care anymore if he finishes, because I know he won't.

I thought the first 3 were outstanding, then the 4th was fairly mediocre; and I have a pretty strong dislike of A Dance With Dragons. Maybe because the series started off so well and he can do so much better. It seemed like Martin was intent on creating more and more minor characters as he went along, and emphasized the least interesting. It just got tedious by the last one.

I'm actually with you on that, but didn't want to get into a relative quality of book 4 and 5 argument with some of the huge fans so kind of geared my commentary towards the generally accepted ranking.

The books are fine, but overrated (and the drop off in quality for the latter 2 books is overstated). I remember thinking he describes outfits in detail WAY too much. I never want to read the phrase "boiled leather" again.

Way before "got" came out on HBO. It's a great series but alot pf.the plots, scenes and characters was changed/adjusted from book to TV to get more interest from audience imo.

It won’t be ended. He let the book story get too big with too many moving parts.

To end it with the same quality it would take like 3 or 4 more books, not 1 or 2.

That task is so daunting he can’t bring himself to quit counting his money and even write one.

Series gets worse as it goes.

I would recommend something else tbh.

I am in a re-read right now. It is truly the best experience for the franchise. I have read the comics, watched the series, etc. Reading gets into the fine details other mediums cannot. From the age, hair and eye color, etc. I am hoping for the animated version long rumored.

Don’t really understand some of the hate in here. These are the best, most detailed fantasy novels ever written. The first 3 are the best books but the 4th and 5th are also very good and get better on rereads. There’s always little details I pick up on upon a reread. Super interesting lore and the world building is just phenomenal. Once you finish the novels in the main storyline, read the Dunk and Egg novels, they take place about 90 years before the main story and they also have cool lore and links to the main story. I can’t get enough of them. As has been mentioned, George’s writing pace is entirely frustrating and I pray the man lives to finish them. 11 years to finish a book is inexcusable.

Side note: the audiobooks are also great, ESPECIALLY the Dunk and Egg ones. They are read by the actor who plays Viserys in season 1 and damn does that dude have a talent for reading these. He is fantastic as a narrator. The main storyline audiobooks are narrated by Roy Dotrice, he plays the old haggard pyromancer from season 2 in the show. Also a good reader but sometimes his dictation makes it hard to interpret what he’s saying.

I read the first one. It was pretty good, but didn't really leave me wanting to read any others.

I would disagree that they are the best, most detailed ever written. Very good but I wouldn't necessarily put it in my top 5 over 5 books - the first 3 are excellent but the last two does bring down the series ranking for me.

An unfinished series (and likely not to be finished) is a pretty big detriment in my ability to recommend it to someone looking for a fantasy series.

The best?

That's an opinion mate.

There are too many good fantasy series out there, is ASOFAI among them? Certainly.

The first books of the series are good enough to carry the entirety imo.

What am I entitled to if not my own opinion? Of course it’s just an opinion, I think there’s some strong arguments for best, though.
