The fact that this is just clearly a dude writing a book with no forced messaging is kind of refreshing.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Matt clearly is writing purposeful political messaging into the books and has said he hopes and I paraphrase "the glurp glurp readers will see that and build some empathy."

The political messaging I get and don't care. Was meaning forced gay stuff

I mean all his sex stuff is deranged anyway. It hasn’t shied away from having gay couples, he’s done trans characters with other series. That’s why I don’t get people complaining about it not being there or saying it’s not there. It’s there, but the story really isn’t about romantic things, so it’s not going to be in your face.

By representation, they likely mean it has to be a big deal that someone told you they were gay, then there has to be oppression from a third party or a big heart to heart or it has to be a main character that mentions it often

Can't be a side character where it is not their entire identity and never mentioned again

Not getting much of that in DCC simply because few people have time for relationships and of all the reasons to turn on someone, sexuality is pretty damn far down the list compared to being a psycho or a backstabber.

That doesn't matter. There must be representation at all times

I haven't seen anyone complaining about it personally, but that response is typical

I'm about halfway through the first book and have really enjoyed it so far. I'm listening to the Audible version and really like the narrator.

Fixes chapter metadata, lack of pauses between chapters, and a cut-off sentence in the last post-credits scene

Make sure you keep listening to the very end. There is another one of the audiobook ads that is pretty hilarious.

First 20 or so chapters in the new book are pretty slow. Think it's bout to rev up with Carl in the Joey outfit though

Finished it just now. I don't know... it just didn't do it for me like some of the others. I honestly think it's because it's been so long since I read the last one, and it took me a long time to get "up to speed" with everything that was going on. I found myself just sort of plowing ahead instead of really savoring the descriptions and everything that was going on. I also had a hard time keeping up with exactly what was happening with the various metaplots. Anyway, I will probably go back and reread some of the books leading up to it then hit this one again.

I saw alot of comments from the author before I read this book and I definitely saw him trying to shoehorn some of "The Message" in here.

That didn't bother me as much (it was definitely shoehorned in) as it seemed this book was very shallow to me. I dont know if it was the gap from book 7 to 8, or if he just didnt really focus on this book and used it to bridge the gap to book 9 and 9.5.

Just finished Parade of Horribles yesterday. Would probably rank it at #2 out of the series.

Just finished it. Glad I did reread but as someone else said after the inevitable ruin and faction wars, this one took a minute to get into. Also very glad I reread so all info was fresh. Thought there was a love angle going on throughout the book and glad it swerved off. Cant wait to see how it finishes. Boop!

But when the heat turned up in this one….. man it’s good. Probably my second favorite of the series so far.

Yeah, it took me a bit to get into it as well. The racing theme just kinda put me off, as well as the pace of the floor in general. A little after the Carl in the kangaroo suit bit is when it started to take off for me. I'd definitely put it in the top 3 of the series for me probably.

I had just finished a reread before starting it, and the seventh book was way better for me on reread than the first time through.
