Faulkner used to say that the most demanding form of writing is poetry, then the short story, and then the novel. He also said that they are the most rewarding and rich in that order.

What short story collections have you read/do you own/do you like the best?

O'connor and henry james had pretty good stories in their collections, as did Faulkner. I'm seeking to buy some more.

King has had some great short story collections. My favorites are Different Seasons and Everything's Eventual.

I just came here to post Flannery O'Connor but you've already got that on your list I see.

I've read Franz Kafka's stories, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Robert McCammon had a book of short stories called "Blue World"

I just bought a collection of H.P. Lovecraft short stories that I need to start reading. I've never read Lovecraft, but I like the mythos of Cthulu from what I know if it. I hope it lives up to my expectations.

King has a few really good ones.

There is a version of I Am Legend that comes with several short stories included that are really good.

Pretty much any collection you can find of Ray Bradbury short stories will be great.

My Dad had bought me some anthology collections when I was younger for Christmas gifts and such. I haven't bought any for myself for a while. The old ones that I have are science fiction writers like Asimov and Clark. I also have several by Ellison. I really like Ellison's work, and he wrote pretty much exclusively short stories. I'm not sure that he even wrote any full length novels.

I'm sure I've bought others at some time in the past but the one that I can remember buying are a couple of Hemingway's collections. In Our Time which I think was his first and I think just an overall collection of his short stories.

IMHO they are well worth a read. Stories like A Clean Well Lighted Place are really good reading.

Yeah, frankly Hemmingway was at his best in his short stories.

Those are the real deal to read.

Bradbury has some good ones from back in the day. The October Country is one of the best.

Ellen Gilchrist has a bunch of great short stories about Nola when it was a great city. Check out "Rich", I'm sure you can find it online if you don't want to purchase her entire collection.

I'm another fan of Ellison, though it's been a while since I've read him. He had a couple of novellas, but no novels. The man was a trip in person, too.

Check out The Overcoat by Nicolai Gogol if you haven't read it already. A new favorite of mine:
