Just finished the books.

And I fear this thread will take me longer than all of them combined.

No. He's too busy watching and critiquing films.

First... I don't think the letter to Jon came from Ramsey. I'm sure that's a popular thought though.

Do I think Jon's dead? No. It said he didn't even feel the 4th knife. I'm likely taking too much from that, but I think he's warg'd into Ghost. Again, popular thought.

I hate what the movies did to Selmy. frickers.

I like what they've done with Tyrian though. Penny is annoying as frick.

Danny better be on the move. She's been in the east FOREVER. Time to get the hell back to westeros.

Aria's story went further along and has definitely been the most true to the books in the movies. I'm surprised she got her sight back so soon.

There is speculation it could be before next season. He is meeting with his editors next month and the hope is that it is to turn Winds in. Probably 2019 though.

Meh - there's 50 different "near death" scenarios. If the body survives, it survives. If it dies, it has to come back - either when they burn it (which I actually envisioned that possibility on the show when they burned Aemon's body - a rare example where my imagination worked better with the visual than without it), a la Dany and the dragons, Melisandre doing the Red God Magic, or because of the innate nature of who some of us suspect Jon Snow actually is.

In any event, death isn't always permanent in ASOIAF - Snow kind of needs to die to be relieved of his oath. Warging into Ghost might be an easy way to bring his spirit back, particularly if Melisandre needs to make preparations or if Thoros has to be brought in, whatever.

If he's not dead, but merely gravely wounded, that poses other problems - how long will it take to recover and will he be ready to fight?

Some good theories. Here's my take on a couple of them:

quote:

It is popular. I was leaning that way myself (though I didn't have any strong convictions on it one way or the other). But the events of the show regarding the Boltons and Stannis makes me think that letter was maybe pretty accurate regardless of who wrote it.

Yes. Well, kinda. He's likely dead but won't stay that way.

Have you come across the Great Northern Conspiracy theories (probably my favorite) and R+L=J?

After I read it I figured it was Ramsay, why not? It wasn't until I started reading theories that I started to think he didn't write. We won't know if it's not, until the book comes out. Since he's already stabbed in the show I don't see it being mentioned.

I don't know if the GNC is real, but I loved reading it and I hope it is It was so long it seemed like some lost chapter of the book.

The biggest theory is R+L=J. If we get a TOJ flashback AND they show the fight that may have to be the best episode ever just cause of that

way too many things wrong for Ramsey to have written the letter

Yep, I agree, now. But while reading Jon Snow reading it and giving his speech, I was too busy putting on some armor to ride with the fookers.

I was so hype and then he walked out the door and I wanted to break everything in my house

I'm almost certain it came from Davos. He had contact with the Dreadfort's Maester. He would have knowledge of all that was said in the letter. The letter urges Jon to send Shireen to Winterfell, and we now know that Mel is probably going to light her up. Shireen has been teaching him to READ for christ sake. It all points to Davos, I will be shocked if it isn't from him at this point.

Just my strong opinion. I thought her burning in the show, and the constant nods to her teaching Davos, was just too much to ignore.

Another that I feel there is too much textual evidence to ignore. Jon is going to warg ghost, his body will be put in the ice cells. That much I am certain of.

I think the other warg is there to shed light on the situation. His only purpose is for this situation, first to inform Mel that Jon is living in Ghost. Jon's body will probably be raised by Mel, but thats only half the battle, because Jon is still stuck inside Ghost. Now, in the prologue, we saw Varamyr try to take a woman's body. She forcibly pushed him out. I believe the entire point of this was to demonstrate that a warg can be pushed out of a body that he inhabits. My opinion is that either the other warg, or (less likely) Bran, will force Jon out of Ghost and back into his body. Jon will obviously be a little "changed" and retain some of Ghost's characteristics due to spending a considerable amount of time in him. I will be interested to see exactly how long he spends in Ghost though. This whole scenario is a loophole in and of itself, because while Jon will take on characteristics of Ghost, he will not lose part of himself like Cat does. Because while his body dies, warging allows his soul to live on.

I don't see how it is possible how Davos would know this, be cruel enough to send it, or even be able to write it without serious grammatical errors. I think Davos can be ruled out.

But in general, I don't know why people overthink this. I think it's just as simple as it seems: the Bastard is largely bluffing about taking down Stannis, but is truthful about everything else. It makes perfect sense to me.

Davos is the last person to do something that deceitful.

I think it was someone working with the watch trying to get him to betray his oath and using that as a pretext to kill him. I'm thinking the queen or the red priest herself. The queen seems too obvious. But if the priest is as smart as she thinks she is, what if this was her plot to get him out from under the restraints of being commander of the watch as Ace suggested?

Yeah, Davos would never do anything like that. Davos, even over Ned, I think is the most honorable character in the series. He has the best moral compass in the series and can always see what is right.

You misunderstand my claim. I don't think its Davos's intent for Jon to be murdered. I think he's expelling every last resort to get Shireen away from Mel. He's trying to be a hero, not ruin everything. Its tragically poetic and I think its exactly the type of thing GRRM would write.

Which is why he is going to these lengths to get Shireen away from Mel. Its absolutely tragic and the furthest thing from his intent that, if this holds true, Shireen will be burned and Jon attacked as a result of his actions.
