So this year he has wrote "some pages."

His pace has actually slowed down. That's incredible.

Damn. That’s an absolute barn burner of a tweet and summarizes George better than I ever could.

He doesn’t, which should surprise no one.

Does he not understand that this just pisses people off at this point? Nobody cares what is preventing you from writing the books. We just want the damn books finished. He'd be way better off assuming that we already know why he hasn't finished.

I’m willing to bet he does. Does anyone have a worse relationship with “his fans” than George does? I actively despise this man, and laughed my arse off when Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse bit their tongue for nearly a decade on tubby have the balls the to insult their ending, and then they just let him have it once the series finale aired.

He may be many things, but he's not stupid. He knows how the fans of his books feel, he just doesn't particularly care enough to make a change in his life and finish the fricking books.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a conversation with George R. R. Martin without asking how he’s balancing these projects with the long-awaited sixth and final book, The Winds of Winter, in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. “Unfortunately, I am 13 years late,” he says. “Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time.”

He has reached the Acceptance stage.

Yeah, I doubt he has written a word of Winds of Winter in years. He spends every moment working on as many other projects as he can find. That way he doesn't have to think about this failure.

He came close to admitting it here in this interview but really needs to just tell the world that he is no longer actively writing it. Everyone would be happier including him. Move on.

Man he really did.

This is as close as he will get to admitting it. I think he's probably too much of a coward to ever admit he won't finish it but that's pretty dang close.

His "updates" are getting worse and worse every time.

At this point I just really really hope on his death bed he has a change of heart and let's someone like Joe Abercrombie finish the story.

Once he's gone it will be up to his estate. I guess whoever that woman is that he talks about. Will he leave behind enough money that she won't go for a big final payout in defiance of his wishes? It would be so fitting if she fricks him and lets someone else finish it.

This year I ate some pizza, got some new cool suspenders, was afraid to go outside, and edited one page (wink wink)

He is 76 and fat. How much time does he have left? To be clear, I am not wishing ill on the guy. I hope he has many, many years left.

But it has been almost 14 years since the last book was published. Even back then he was saying WoW would be done in "a year or so".

I think most realize he isnt capable of finishing the series. And he is too stubborn to bring in help. This is his worst mistake. Bringing in an experienced partner to help him finish the series is the best option. It will still be his vision but having a cowriter will help him get past his writers block and finish the last two books while he is still alive.

He would have the pride of giving a proper finish to one of the greatest fantasy series of all time.

Instead, he is choosing to be a stubborn dick and leave a legacy of laziness and failure.

Such a waste.

LOL

I just got back from a concert destination event in Cancun. GRRM was there partying with the rest of us. Looked to me like he’s having a blast living life

If he came out and said he was done with the books because of the stress it caused him. If he said that at his age, it's not good for him. I would not blame him at all. Most people at his age are not working anymore. However, he has not done that. He still keeps feeding bullshite to the fans. Also, if the rumors of the story dying with him are true, I don't blame anyone for hating him for it.

no offense but that’s kinda weird…to “hate” a creator who didn’t create the way you wanted him to? I guess that’s your prerogative but still, weird

Not really weird imo. The guy has lied to his fans for years. Fans that have made him rich. He also is so arrogant and selfish that no one is allowed to finish his story if he dies. Gtfo GRRM. You'll be dead, why wouldn't you want your story finished.

I wasn't a Wheel of Time fan but look how good that turned out because he let a talented writer finish his story. That was a pretty awesome gesture to his fans instead of leaving people that followed for decades stuck without an ending.

Martin clearly only cares about money at this point, just doing all he can to get as many spin off shows going as possible and not working on his story at all. Considering the lazy pos he has turned into, I don't see a single reason to like the guy, and also get why people would hate him.

Except that he is not creating anything. He is making a conscious decision to not have his story finished. I don't care if he reveals the ending in a blog post. However, if the end of the story dies with him, I would compare it to Rose throwing the necklace in the ocean at the end of Titanic. "Sure, I am dying and this will not impact me at all, but I am just going to throw all of this away at the end".

But if he ever publishes another page of ASOIAF, he'll be hailed as the "American Tolkein" again.

Correct.

I wouldn’t have an issue with him if he did the following:

1. Admit he’s stuck in his writing and allowing someone else to come in to assist.

2. Not blame the fans at every turn for the “pressure” of finishing when he’s had no problem milking the property for every single dime possible from those same fans and just not writing (for those who don’t know, he only writes “At home”, he refuses to write ASOIAF on the road).
