Just finished.
A bit disappointed.
I’d be interested in other’s thoughts.

Been a long time, but when I read it in high school I thought it was a big pile of meh. Holden is a whiny little bitch.

I read it as an adult a decade ago, and I had similar thoughts.
Didn't understand what all the hoopla was about.

It’s a terrible book only beloved by outcast losers who think depression is cool.

It's been some time since I read it. Remember thinking some of the anecdotes were pretty funny, but that Holden was a spoiled little bitch.

I didn't really get it when I read it thirty years ago, and then I worked at a prep school in New England.

It's been about 10 years since I read it, but thought it wasn't as good as the hype it's gotten over the years. Probably got a lot of attention when it came out in the '50s b/c people realized "Oh no, teens think like that?" Yeah, Holden's pretty whiny.

I think it is a great book. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it changed my life when I read it as a fifteen year old.
To each their own I guess.

I read it as an adult and thought it was pretty bad. Couldn't stand Caufield.

I liked it and Raise High The Roof Beam Carpenters.

It's the GOAT male coming of age story while simultaneously being the GOAT murderer inspiration.

I read it in high school and hated it.
30 years later I decided to read it as a more seasoned adult. I still hate it. There is no critically acclaimed book that I dislike more.

We read Catcher In the Rye and A Separate Peace in high school, and pretty much everyone hated A Separate Peace and liked Catcher In the Rye. It was several years later when I realized Catcher was such a polarizing book. I don't think it's as good or as bad as so many people make it out to be. It's an average book with an annoying main character. I have no desire to ever read it again.

The first time I read it, as a young person, I remember thinking, "This guy is obviously mentally ill, but I agree with almost everything he says."

Was my favorite book when I read it in high school. I used to reread it every year, but, around age 21/22, i stopped. I just grew out of it, I think.

It meant more to me in high school than it does now, but I still think Salinger was a brilliant craftsman in terms of style. In some ways, I would equate it to trying to listen to your favorite album from high school twenty years later. While I still love Nevermind, it doesn't reflect my current mental state the way it did at sixteen.

The Beatniks and Hippies overhype that book something awful. It is also a product of its time. It was a lot more salient and relevant in its heyday, particularly with the younger GI Generation and older boomers.
Hasn't aged well.

I thought it was boring, whiney, and depressing

It's a book, like On The Road, that's not aged well. This was breakthrough stuff at that time. Now, it's just a bit meh.
