The LA Times has put a list of possible coaching candidates together that would succeed Phil Jackson as the Lakers next coach. It's a list of names we all know and some that come up for every job available. But I think it comes down to them going young and fresh or older and more established. Their list looks like this...
quote:

Brian Shaw
Shaw played on three NBA championship teams with the Lakers and he has been an assistant coach under Jackson for six seasons.

Rick Adelman
Adelman, who will be 65 in June, has loads of experience. He's also been the coach with the Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings.

Byron Scott
Scott is part of the Lakers' family, having been a guard on three NBA championships with the team during the Showtime era of the 1980s.

Doc Rivers
He won an NBA title in 2008, leading the Celtics over the Lakers. Rivers is a tough-minded coach who demands respect.

Kurt Rambis
Rambis was a fan favorite as a forward when he helped the Lakers win four championships during the 1980s. He also has been on Jackson's staff, winning championships in 2002 and 2009.

Jeff Van Gundy
He was coach of the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets. Van Gundy is an NBA analyst on ABC, but many believe he wants to coach again, and that he wouldn't turn down a shot at the Lakers.

Larry Brown
Brown, 70, has coached nine NBA teams, so his name always comes up. But he quit, resigned or was fired from his last job with the Charlotte Bobcats.

Mike Krzyzewski
Krzyzewski's name has come up in the past, including in 2004 when Jackson left. But the longtime Duke coach said during this spring's NCAA tournament that he wasn't interested in the Lakers job.

Jerry Sloan
Sloan, 68, stepped down as coach of the Utah Jazz in February, and some think he could be a candidate. But Sloan seems content in retirement.
You like any of these? If not, who?

Brian Shaw - probably most likely candidate. deserves a shot somewhere if not with the Lakers

Jerry Sloan, Doc Rivers, and Mike Krzyzewski - probably just not options. one is retired the second sitting out for one year, and the other is staying in college at this point in his career

Kurt Rambis or Byron Scott - keep it in the family hires? Could go this way... esp with Scott who has some success as a head coach. But I doubt they do

Rick Adelman or Jeff Van Gundy - respectable hires but retreads who probably don't get you to the promised land. Would feel to me like bringing in Doug Collins to lay a foundation for the next coach

Lakers won't hire a coach until the lockout is over

That's a horrible list IMO.

4 of those are no shot candidates (Rivers/Sloan/Brown/Coach K)

4 of those are WHY? (Rambis , Van Gundy/Scott/Adelman- who I like as a coach but Buss aint hiring him)

which leaves Shaw

Shaw the most likely, though I could see Rambis, Jeff Van, and Scott as well. Jeff Van may not have Laker history but he does have experience and isn't as old as the other candidates (Adelman, Brown, and Sloan not likely due to age).

Rivers, no. If he leaves Boston he'll wait until a retooled Orlando team (where he lives) fires Stan Van, then take that job.

Coach K stays at Duke 4-5 more years, aims for 1,000 D1 victories, maybe another NC, then hangs it up.

amen.

especially if they trade some of their veterans and try to rebuild with younger guys who Byron Scott will refuse to even let dress.
if Kobe is the only veteran left on the team, his starting five will be:

PG - Nobody
SG - Kobe
SF - Nobody
PF - Nobody
C - Nobody

His team has lost 76 of the last 100 games he has coached.

Rivers and Shaw out of that group.

If I were LA, I'd consider Adelman, Rivers, and Sloan for sure, possibly Rambis as well.

The problem with Adelman or Sloan is that you need to have assistants on hand to take over if they decide to call it a career.

I'd question whether Shaw should be hired considering he was part of the coaching staff that couldn't fix this team's massive problems in the playoffs.

Scott has a history of being unable to develop young players and having personality clashes with both his young guys and his stars like Jason Kidd.

I think Van Gundy and Brown are a bit too flaky to stick around.

K won't leave Duke for the pros at this age.

Anything to get Van Gundy off the analyst/color commentary stage. I hate listening to games he has anything to do with

Van Gundy, Mark Jackson, and Mike Breen are the best in the business.. personally i think he should stay where he's at, he's a good coach but not great

i'd even throw Adelman in there.. maybe some of the Houston folks know more about the situation than i do but i always thought he got a raw deal considering he had his best player on the court for maybe 5 games his whole career.. despite that Houston was always competitive until this season
