LSU CLAIMS 49TH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH MEN’S TRACK NCAA TITLE

BATON ROUGE – LSU claimed the school’s 49th national team championship – tied for the most of any school in the Southeastern Conference - over the weekend when the Tigers’ men’s track and field team lapped the field with an overwhelming victory at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

LSU ran away with the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships, recording 84 points to finish well ahead of second place Oregon, who scored 53 points.

The 49th national team title for the Tigers ranks first along with Arkansas among SEC schools. All 49 of LSU’s national championships have come while members of the SEC, while the Razorbacks won 12 of their national titles prior to joining the league in 1992.

It was the 250th national title for the SEC which has seven to its credit for 2020-21. LSU, a charter member of the SEC, won the league’s first national championship in 1933 when the Tiger track and field team captured the NCAA title in Chicago.

LSU has won national titles in eight sports with women’s outdoor track and field leading the way with 14 to its credit. The LSU women’s indoor track and field team has captured 11 national championships, followed by baseball with six, and men’s outdoor track and field and men’s golf with five apiece.

The Tiger football program has won the national title four times, most recently in 2019, while men’s indoor track and field has two national championships along with one each for men’s basketball and boxing.

Of the 49 championships Pat Henry accounted for 28 (57%). Skip Bertman as AD let A&M take him away. Since then Henry won 9 more national championships which conceivably could have been LSUs had he been here. Bertman definitely did not “hold the rope” in regard to track and field. I think he may have been irked by the fact that almost every spring when he would win the baseball title Henry would steal some of the limelight by bringing home a T&F national title.
