SEC Files New Brief Ahead Of LSU Eligibility Hearing, Greg Sankey Defends Former-Pro Ban

The SEC filed a new brief with a Louisiana court on Wednesday ahead of Thursday's preliminary injunction hearing in Baton Rouge over the ongoing eligibility dispute involving LSU and former professional players.

According to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, the filing includes an affidavit from SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and lays out the conference's argument for why it should maintain the authority to enforce its eligibility rules against member schools.

The SEC also argues that Sankey should not be held personally liable in the case.

In his affidavit, Sankey explained why the conference remains opposed to former professional players returning to college rosters.

"Each roster spot filled by a former pro athlete is a roster spot that becomes unavailable to a high school student-athlete or another less-developed athlete who would benefit from the educational & athletic growth opportunities uniquely available through college sports," Sankey said.

The filing comes one day before Thursday's key hearing in Baton Rouge, where a judge will consider whether to extend the current court protection preventing the SEC from enforcing its new eligibility rules and associated penalties.

LSU has been at the center of the dispute as the Tigers explore adding former NFL players to their roster. Lane Kiffin has maintained that LSU will follow whatever SEC rules are ultimately enforceable once the court provides further clarity.

Lmao….how in the holy hell will LSU or any other school bringing back a player “now” affect a single high school student?? They are in high school…playing high school football. They won’t be coming to a college program until next year…AFTER this season is OVER! What a ding dong!

What roster spot is being taken away from a HS athlete when the signing day is in February and the ruling came down in June?... Also, this won’t happen in other time, because the ruling is new to 2022 class. Won’t be new now.

So it says players should not play more than 4 years because they take opportunity away from HS and younger players. Don't we have players in their 5th or 6th year with other teams right now? How about Ole Miss QB that even NCAA banned?

why dafuq is this clown going after this dude. One guy who did not end up sticking around with the Cowboys this offseason was undrafted rookie Cole Hutson, as he participated in the team’s rookie minicamp shortly after the draft. In a surprise turn of events, rather than looking for a new home in the pros, Hutson will be returning to college to play for the Texas Longhorns.

It's pathetic that Sankey put forth weak arse sauce the day prior to the hearing tomorrow. He needs to be shown the door as these past two years from him have been useless to the conference.

These guys are only looking for their 5th year of eligibility like everyone else.

That argument is absurd considering that there are 6 and 7 year guys playing this year.

It’s definitely punishment to LSU for taking Kiffin.

Ok, what about Trinidad chambliss or Diego Pavia. Are we fining those schools half of their operating budget and suspending their coaches for half a season since they played players that took a spot from someone younger and less developed. I mean I think he makes a valid point, it's just why did nobody lose their mind until it was LSU.
