LSU's starting defensive back, Sage Ryan, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to a report from Lonn Phillips.

Ryan confirmed the news with a message on social media.

The former five-star prospect from Lafayette, La., was initially recruited as a safety but played all over the secondary for LSU, eventually settling into the cornerback position at the back end of this season.

He registered 35 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, and three pass breakups this season.

If Ryan departs the program, he will be the ninth player to enter the transfer portal this offseason. He is the only one out of the group who played significant starting snaps this year.

Honestly this is what the portal is for. He was a 5 star who has been pedestrian or worse here. He is betting on himself, getting a change of scenery, and seeing if he can grow with a different DB coach in a different system.

Best of luck! I hope he succeeds!

It's a sad state of affairs when your "best DB" leaves and he's not even "average"...need a new DBs coach, who can coach and recruit

The coaches stood by him all season and he leaves. Disappointed in Sage.

The picture explains it all. Safeties need to thump...he arm tackled like a corner and covered like a LB.
Hope he succeeds somewhere outside the SEC.

Watched TAMU game and focused on him for a lot of it. In my opinion, this young man is overmatched physically. Hope his transfer works out for him.

Guess the evaluation and feedback wasn’t good.

Glad he came to LSU....he just never worked out...I think his size limited him at safety and his speed limited him at CB...I wish him well.

probably right. it's like in my field. sometimes you just have to change jobs to get paid. i don't blame him. somebody will pay him, like Indiana or a school like that, for a chance to have an 'SEC Caliber' guy.

He never came close to performing at a 5 star level. Now that he is gone, people are upset simply b/c he is from home?

Did BK tell him that we got better coming in, sorry?

The defensive lineup and status of defensive coaches are rapidly becoming big questions for next year. But thats what the 10 million salary is supposed to solve.

Good message to all the Tards who think stars are the only thing that matter

Hate to see any Tiger leave early but Sage is the perfect example of how the star-rating of high school recruits is a bit misleading. He never reached the potential that is worthy of 5 stars. He will be missed, but we will survive!

I guess SEC level of play was too much for him. I wish him well wherever he ends up at.

I wish he'd go back home to UL and help those guys out.

Maybe he’ll stick it out in Baton Rouge. Give the guy a break and he will get better. He had some real positives this year

Does anyone remember the melt when word was he was committing to Bama. It all seems a little silly now.
