Probably not happy with Baylor recruiting narrative? Could Aranda be talking smack on recruiting trail?
user avatar

Probably just being honest by (under)stating the obvious...aranda failed to live up to his billing/paygrade not only last year but even moreso year before last.

Hard to argue. examples? Texas got back in a game that was over because of the defense Alabama threw two bomb TDs to Smith due to defensive brain farts (from the sideline) Ole Miss QB/RB make LSU look silly in the second half
user avatar
Wow Coach O really through Aranda under the bus for no reason. Aranda was so terrible that he got a head coaching gig with Baylor.

The problem with the D last year was they never dominated From fart to finish until the aTm game. After that they were lights out. Texas and Bama ran up and down the field on us in the second half. Florida did the same in the first. And we gave up 38 pts to Vandy ( I know two of their scores were the offenses fault, but still that’s 24 pts we gave up defensively) And that ole miss kid ran circles around us. Nothing against Aranda. BuT I think the D will be fine esp with Bo back at the realm. Should be fun to watch.

Although the defense did come on strong for the stretch run, it is fair that "we" did not play well on defense for the whole 2019 season. There were some injuries, some scheme/personnel issues that all contributed to this. This is a situation where building up one coach (Pelini) comes at the cost of his predecessor (Aranda), and I'm torn because I think those are 2 of the 3 best DCs in LSU history (Charles MF McClendon being the other).

Calm down it's coach speak designed to motivate the players and coaches here now.

yea he is speaking at the rotary club, those moneybags need to hear things like this so they can throw money at LSU...I wouldnt be surprised if he had said, it was he who encouraged DA to look elsewhere for a job!!

He is being salty at Aranda taking a HC gig at Baylor. Prior this this last year, Aranda was the man who made LSU look respectable. He got more LBs drafted than any coach in LSU's history. He certainly lost part of his knack last year, but I believe that he was focused on getting out of Baton Rouge this year. But buw...O making that statement is pure dogshit. you should never throw someone under the bus, specially when they helped you during your bad time. O was known to be a shrimp boat captain among my colleagues prior to this year. Aranda helped him not look aweful.

Have to admit the "D" was a little soft last year. Especially early in the year. But did turn it up toward the end of the year and the CFB. But with that offense any defense would of looked pretty good.

By week three the Rant will be lamenting how losing Dave Aranda killed us.
user avatar

maybe you're too young to remember Bo coaching our D ? There will be no lamenting.

You're insane. Pelini put together some of our best defenses. You're just insane.

He’s right. Rewatching the games so many times during this covid shite, yeah there many head scratcher moments by the D in key plays, even the announcers calling it out. If you rewatch the big games you can’t miss it.

Really?? "That's why Pelini is here??" LOL So, all that praise Aranda got was not due, he got all that damn money for nothing then if you say some crap like that. Also, Pelini may be a good DC, but when he was DC for Miles he wasn't all that to me. I know people on here may disagree with me, but the year Miles luckily got into the NC game with the best team in the country, and won his only title against Ohio State, Pelini's defense struggled. They couldn't stop a average Kentucky team from scoring and beating LSU in 3 OT's. Then they lose an embarrassingly home game to a bad Arkansas team in 3 OT's again with McFadden running all over them from the Wildcat. Smh

Pelini had top 5 defenses in all 3 of his seasons at LSU. His defenses were extremely good and fun to watch. Are you really using 2 games from 2007, where Arky and UK both put up fewer than 28 points in regulation, as evidence that Pelini sucks? I guess you forgot when Aranda literally could not stop a shitty A&M team led by Kellen Mond from hanging 70+ on him. Aranda’s D was soft as frick after he got paid, it was extremely disappointing
user avatar
tubucoco52 months
@Forever - Never said anything about Pelini sucks, don't put words in my mouth like a lot of y'all non interpreters like to do. I said Pelini is a solid DC, but ain't all that, I believe. Both Pelini and Aranda have their faults or weaknesses, but they're both solid DC's. But both Kentucky and Arkansas should have been teams beaten in regulation by LSU, it shouldn't have gone 3 OT's. LSU was the best team in the country that year by far and all the sportswriters in the country knew it which is why they voted them to play in the NC game.
user avatar
tubucoco52 months
Also, any DC that comes to LSU winds up becoming a top DC because of the tremendous talent that a LSU has every year from recruiting, so, it's no surprise Pelini had top defenses while there. Lol I mean look what that tremendous talent did for a John Chavis and Dave Aranda while they were there.

He's absolutely right. We need to get back to that smash mouth LSU Defense.

I love O but he has lost his mind. That D at the end of the year and when healthy was as good as anybody in the country.

This defense played big in the biggest games and at the most important time in the games. Did they have break downs? yes. But really good defenses make stops in games at the really most important times. That's not me saying that. It comes directly from Troy Aikman. He has said multiple times to give him the defense that makes the critical stops, not the one that looks great statistically. The defense made stops against Texas, Auburn, and as it got healthy shut down Georgia, Oklahoma and Clemson. There were games they played soft with big leads in games that were never in doubt.
user avatar
baobabtiger52 months
The defense started off very poorly. However week by week they got better. By the time uga Oklahoma, and Clemson came around they controlled the game pretty easily.

I wonder if this means Aranda was pushed out? Hmmmmm....
user avatar
BayouTiga52 months
Not pushed out BUT. It was hard for Coach 'O' to get over the multiple F'ups by Aranda vs. the gumps! We were just one more Aranda mistake from losing.

LSU defense was ok but not good under Aranda any year.

What an idiot. Throw your D and former DC under the bus when you run the table.

Dude... pull up your panties and grow a pair. I’m 100% certain Stevens, Stingley, and the DL beasts can take this as a challenge and man up. If you have a sack, you should do the same.

Defense was very Jekyl and Hyde last year. Overall, I had no problem with Aranda...god knows he kept us in and won games before we had an offense. Wasnt a big fan of 3-4 but I appreciate Arandas overall tenure
user avatar
CalTiger5352 months
Like the game at 74-72 game at TA&M. Aranda has more than 20 opportunities to make one stop that would have won the game and he didn't.
user avatar
GoneFishing2152 months
Players have to make plays too. Both defenses were too tired to be effective at the end of that game.

I don’t get it. It sounds like a shot to me. The defense was on the field a lot (thanks to our quick strike offense), was inexperienced in spots (which later became strengths...Queen and Stingley Jr.), and was banged up in key spots (Delpit). Thank Aranda, wish him luck (as long as it doesn’t interfere with the interests of LSU), and talk about a great hire in Pelini.
user avatar
GoneFishing2152 months
He’s praised Aranda so many times. I think O knows the issues with injuries and lack of veterans in some positions. Aranda chose to leave for another position. I just take it as him saying that the defense was bad at times last year and he thinks Pelini will be a fix for some of those issues.

The country is fricked and going to be so mad when LSU is at or near the top once again.
