A recurring theme this season during press conferences and in-game interviews has been Brian Kelly talking about how the staff needs to coach better.

On Monday, Kelly spoke to reporters and the first question he was asked was about self-scouting the coaching...

quote:

Q. You talked a lot about coaching it better. How do you self-scout that part of it when you are busy and your guys are busy trying to get the game plans ready for the next week, review the last week, et cetera? How much of it can you actually implement?

BRIAN KELLY: I think it's a lot more about recognizing your players and what you can do to put them in better positions as you get a chance to know your players even more.

I think that's where good coaching and good assessment comes in. Then, how are they retaining knowledge? Everybody learns differently. Is it walk-throughs? Is it whiteboard teaching? Is it more film study?

I think we have to look at our teaching. And if it's not being retained, it falls on us as coaches, teachers, and educators to make sure. It can't be, well, he is just not getting it. We have to look at and find out how can they get that and apply it and take it to the field?
Kelly was later asked about the special teams issues that continue to plague the Tigers...
quote:

Q. Special teams and just kind of picking up on your drift here is that a lot of it is execution, but special teams seems to be something different each week. Going back to my first question, is it still just a learning process of who can do what and their ability to execute what they're asked to do on special teams? Or in your review, has there been a larger issue that kind of seems to be repeating itself?

BRIAN KELLY: Well, look, the areas that are pretty clear -- you watched the game, right? We have to field the football, and we have to tackle in space. Those are clearly areas that we have to be able to get guys to perform at that level.

Do we need to spend more time individually on things? Do we need to demand more from the individuals that are actually out there?

There isn't a whole group of other guys that are ready to play. I mean, we're playing front line. We've got a starting linebackers on our punt return team, and we have one of our best receivers returning kickoff.

It's not like we've got the JV team out there. These are our best guys, and we just have to stick with it and work at getting better.

As usual, he’s right. There’s no magic solution, no secret elite cadre of players waiting in the wings. This is our team this year. They’re just not that good.

When the coach states "the best guys", if you're referring to hands and athletic ability, speed and taking a hit, you're not judging a large concern. The mental game and decision making skills in knowing how to risk assess if a play should even be attempted. How much time is spent in mental decision making in a dynamic game situation is invested? I'm thinking - not enough.

In 2019 we had the best offensive line in the country...the best....just how does the current o-line stack up to that. No running game, busted plays, etc. etc. Until that o-line is as good as 2019 and as good as Alabama and as good as Tennesse...sht's gonna happen.

“These are our best guys, and we just have to stick with it and work at getting better.”

Fans need to realize just how depleted we are and what it will take to get us back to what we’ve grown accustomed to.

Also if Bech is the best guy why is he just know doing this? It was Nabers, then Clayton, now Bech.
Why did it take going 4 games to figure out it was Bech?

He kind of answered that question. He has to e best guys out there.. how often to you see 1st string guys playing special teams? LSU up until recently has been fortunate to have a plethora of talent that could play special teams.

Maybe Kelly was trying to avoid having 1’s do everything…

You shud be able to figure that out...he doesn't want to use starters as fodder...but he's forced to but not without running the options available.

Nabers isn’t a starter?

They need to self scout the cadence. Every time we clap the snap comes.
Change it up - it took 3 quarters last game for us to realize that. Embarrassing.

I don't know but the clap is just the "hut" we're gonna go on, seems to me. If it's on 3, then I'll go hut, hut, hut/clap...I'm thinking, don't know for sure tho.

We fire head coaches now mid season, a special teams coach should be nothing. Call McMahon in Houston today.

So LSU is just now facing fielding football trouble and tackling in space? None of the other teams in CFB have talent deficiencies? Get outta here with that... it's your coaching

“Then, how are they retaining knowledge?“

May have to repeat things a few more times than at Notre Dame.

It's ironic that the picture above was chosen. The problem is standing right next to you coach, do something about it. You can't blame the players with as many independent failures that have occurred on special teams, the common thread is the leadership.

I know every practice is filmed; just go back a few years and watch what Greg McMahon did with his special teams in practice.

No kidding. For all of O's shitty hires that was one of his best.

Basically, the question is will you be looking for a new Special Team's Coach?
