I know two prominent boosters at major Texas schools, and both have expressed their frustration with the current landscape. They’re tired of pouring money into unproven talent—young athletes who don’t seem to grasp the meaning of commitment. What does that tell you? For one, regardless of my financial contributions to LSU, I find it deeply troubling to consider investing significant sums into high school recruits when I wouldn’t even compensate my executive team at that level. The NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) era has fundamentally damaged college football. Here’s a startling tidbit to consider, in the last signing period, two recruits demanded more than $1.5 million each, yet neither of them had played the equivalent of two full seasons of high school football.
At some point, we have to ask—where is this headed, and what kind of message are we sending about commitment, hard work, and value?
