re: Do all Nissan Altima's come from the factory with collision damage?
Posted by JohnnyAlpha on 3/2/23 at 12:32 pm to painman1
In 1993 my wife and I were looking to buy our first new car together. We test drove the Mazda 626, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Saturn SL2. The 626 was in a new model year and I believe the Altima was a new model. We actually liked the Altima a little more than the 626 but the dealer wouldn't budge in negotiations so we went with the 626.
We passed the 626 down to our oldest son when he graduated from high school. He finally traded it in on a used SUV last year. It was still running very well but had a lot of minor issues (driver door lock broken, sunroof leak, trunk wouldn't open (had to reach it through the back seat pull-down), fuel gauge didn't work). It averaged 30 mpg and was a 5-speed. Engine and transmission were still in good shape at 29 years old.

The coffee hasn't kicked in yet this morning for me here on the west coast. I thought this was referring to Liam Neeson and was trying to understand what was so odd about his actual hand to draw the attention of Miley Cyrus.

2 Bible verses that apply:
Proverbs 12:27
The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting, But diligence is man’s precious possession.
Colossians 3:23
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men

re: Energy Secretary demands Energy Companies increase oil supply but wants them shut down

For this group, there is no objective truth - only their own subjective truth. We can wave a magic wand and transition over to "renewable" energy. I think they are either truly deceived assuming that their policies are not destroying the economy or they are purely evil.
Chairman Mao said that politics is war without bloodshed and war is politics with bloodshed. Why would anyone who has grown up in the United States want to allow for political power (read government) as the mechanism for the allocation of economic decisions and resources? The free market creates the best decisions and it completely undermines any prejudice. In a market economy, sales go to the best, most faithful steward, entrepreneur, business or restaurant. The market rewards wisdom and punishes foolishness whereas the government rewards foolishness and punishes wisdom.

re: Great video for those of us like me who wanted to understand the Russia/Ukraine situation

The best video that I've seen was the one on the earlier crisis in Ukraine (from 2014).
John Mearsheimer is a professor of political science at U of Chicago and his presentation is spot on. You should watch the video to its end. The Q&A session has some amazing insights as well (such as the impact of the media and the greater threat posed by China, and the fact that the interventionist U.S. foreign policy ironically leads us into many wars and then many lost wars because we never have a magical exit strategy).
In the end, the U.S. foreign policy promoted by the liberals and neo-cons is causing great harm.

You can set up a Roth IRA custodial account for your child who is working a job but under 18 years old. They can contribute as much as they earn into the account (up to $6,000/year).
Investing $200/month for 50 years with a 10% annual return will grow to $3.46 million (when your child hits 66 years old).
When they turn 18 years old, they take over the account.

My Way was a decent war movie although highly implausible. Great action scenes when the Koreans are conscripted to fight for the Japanese against the Russians. I think the movie was probably a blockbuster in Korea although I had never heard of it.
Also, I enjoyed Inferno quite a bit (with Robert Ryan).

I watched Primer for the first time last night.
It was pretty good but confusing. Part of the issue was that the sound/dialogue is not always clear so that unless you rewind, you can be in the dark about what is going on. I would catch myself thinking, "what did he just say?" and then thinking, "I'll just watch further to get the explanation." Well, there was never an explanation coming.
I love time travel/parallel universe stories and this one has held up fairly well for being a low budget Indie film from 2004.

Interesting to see the comparisons of fighters.
The FW 190 was a nice looking airplane too.
It would be hard to choose between the P-47, P-51 and Corsair for which fighter to be in during a dogfight in WWII.

If you are looking for movies or a series that you may not have heard about, the following are pretty good:
The Final Cut (2004) with Robin Williams.
Deceived (1991) with Goldie Hawn.
Another Version of You (2019) Indie film about parallel universes.
A series that was superb is the Lost Room (2006) with Peter Krause.
Anybody have any other recommendations?

re: “Rogue One” - greatest SW saga movie - agree or disagree?
Posted by JohnnyAlpha on 8/12/21 at 2:08 am to rebelrouser
I hated Solo. It was too cartoonish going for laughs over content. Rogue One was excellent. It definitely felt like one of the first three that came out (episode IV, V, and VI).
I liked Revenge of the Sith. Ian McDiarmid is a perfect villain and his cackle is hilarious.
I really lost interest in the franchise after episode VII (Return of the Jedi) outside of Rogue One. I didn't even bother to watch the most recent installment (Rise of Skywalker).

re: Has something gone wrong at AT&T - like company wide?
Posted by JohnnyAlpha on 7/26/21 at 8:28 pm to Gringo44
DirecTV was really fantastic in the early 2000s; I was happy to always sign up for the service whenever we moved. They would offer discounts if something was screwed up and would also occasionally reward for loyalty.
Once AT&T bought them out, the service has sucked and the price keeps bouncing higher. You've got to pay for a service package monthly to avoid a large repair bill. Screw that. I've been on the fence about getting something different but just haven't taken the time to look.

I always wondered why they had to use deception to get people signed up.
Not a good sign.

James 3:16 "For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there."
Communists are all about creating envy and hatred towards those who "have" and seeking to establish a "legitimate" government to take it away.
