The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt is a World War II-era fighter aircraft produced by the American aerospace company Republic Aviation from 1941 through 1945. Its primary armament was eight .50-caliber machine guns, and in the fighter-bomber ground-attack role it could carry five-inch rockets or a bomb load of 2,500 lb (1,100 kg). When fully loaded, the P-47 weighed up to eight tons, making it one of the heaviest fighters of the war.

This particular P-47D “Razorback” was flown by Lt. Frank Kibbe of the 56th Fighter Group Based at Halesworth, UK in March 1944.
Here is a brief history of the 56th Fighter Group

Vader, ever been to the Museum of Flight in Seattle? They’ve got a P-47, first one I’ve ever been able to see in person. I had no idea how big they were. I mean the thing is massive. A P-51 looks like a tinker toy next to it.

I’ve never been. I’d like to go though. And you’re right the P-47 was a behemoth. Here’s a picture of the engine and turbo system it had. This was the main reason it was so big.

And for to give an idea how big the P-47 was, here’s one with a guy standing next to it.

Now look at a BF109 in a similar picture.

I attempted to build a model mustang once when I was about 13. It was red. Still probably sitting in storage somewhere unfinished.

Have you done an A-10 warthog?

Would love to see that.

A comparison of several fighters against the Thunderbolt. It was a big old boy for sure.

I buy most at a hobby shop in Hoover called The Model Box. Also anytime I travel I look for model shops. Memphis has probably the best I’ve ever seen with a massive selection and great prices. When I was in New Orleans in June I found a hobby shop and bought a couple there. Sometimes I’ll order off Amazon as well.

Very nice Vades I need to add a P-47 to the collection. I’ve currently got a Spitfire, Corsair, P-51, P-38, and a BF-109

What scale you working with?
