Tennessee LB Arion Carter Suspended Two Games by NCAA After $427 Flight

Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter has been suspended for the first two games of the 2026 season after the NCAA ruled that he accepted an impermissible benefit when an NFL agent paid for a $427.48 flight to a pre-draft training facility.

Carter later withdrew from the NFL Draft because of a medical issue, returned to Tennessee for his senior season, and repaid the cost of the flight in full.

The Volunteers quickly came to Carter's defense, with head coach Josh Heupel calling the punishment unwarranted. In a statement, Heupel praised Carter's character, loyalty, and leadership, noting that the linebacker severed ties with the agent in January and reimbursed the full cost of the flight after deciding to return to Knoxville.

"We disagree with the NCAA's ruling on punishing Arion with a multi-game suspension this fall," Heupel said. "Arion made the right decision for his future health and well-being." Heupel also highlighted that Carter will graduate with a degree in public health and Dean's List honors before the season begins.

Carter is expected to miss Tennessee's season opener against Furman and the Volunteers' Week 2 matchup against Georgia Tech. The decision is already drawing criticism from around college football, with many questioning why a player who repaid a relatively minor expense is facing a suspension in the current NIL era.
