First time in 2014 we stayed at Thronson’s in Babb for the duration. This past summer we stayed in Thronson’s the first night, then camped at Johnson’s in St Mary for a few nights before going to the west side.
If you want to stay inside the park, you’ll have to keep checking for cancellations as they fill up 13 months before. Thronson’s only books when they open in May for that season, you have to call them on the phone. They’ll announce when they open and start taking reservations on Facebook. You’ll have to keep calling to try to get through on that first day but eventually you do get through. It’s bare bones but clean and unique. I’m not familiar with any other lodging outside the park on the east side. Thronson’s is our go-to.

Just here to say that Glacier is freaking awesome. Not sure if they're doing tickets for it but if not get on the Going to the Sun Road nice and early to make sure you get in there. The Highline Trail is breathtaking.
GNP is spectacular and I need to return to explore more of the east side.

thank you again
I grabbed a cabin at st Mary village just to have something booked…everything else is sold out
I guess I’m a little late on arrangements (I honestly had no idea)
should be cool now though as we won’t need those stupid timed entry passes traveling westbound, I hate having to plan out days this far out and I want flexibility in case of weather

Friend,
Currently, there are several openings at Many Lodge, or hotel as they are now calling it, for August. Most of the openings are 700 plus per night for a room with a balcony. There is one for $300 without a balcony. Check this website many times each day and more than likely you will find something for your dates. People cancel all the time and Xanterra opens other rooms up. LINK
I agree with the poster who suggested going through the NE part of Yellowstone and doing the Beartooth Highway. That is some of the most beautiful portions of Montana and Wyoming that are often overlooked.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

You’re welcome! It’s our favorite place in the country.
You will still need a vehicle reservation each day you want to go into Many Glacier. I didn’t have any issues getting it though. You just have to get in to recreation .gov and be ready the day they first become available. Some open up 4 months in advance, more the day before. They’re only $1 or so. Worst case you don’t get one, you can just go in before 7am or after 3pm without one (that goes for all areas).

If you wanna continue further, travel up Hwy.95 into BC(it remains 95 on the Canadian side) and go into Golden, B.C. and see the northern Columbia River Valley and it's source. You are also not far from Banff, Glacier(Canadian version) and Yoho National Parks.
My mom's best friend lives there and we visited in July and didn't want to leave. The beauty is undescribable

If you want the 8 hr drive will be easy. open road and very little traffic for the most. can't go wrong with route via big sky or paradise valley via gardiner. bear tooth hwy is very cool but will make trip longer so a stay somewhere probably makes the day easier. East side of glacier is still remote. a few hotels, gas station and couple of restaurants. easier to get into the park from that side. you need to get a park entrance reservation unless you plan to enter the park before 6am or after 3pm. Common place inside park is logan pass which has the a visitor center and large parking lot but it fill up by 7am and then its drive around until you find someone leaving. A lot will depend on what activity you want to do in the park. Short 2-4 mile hike will have crowds. longer 10+ less but even the highline which is 16 round trip has plenty of people since its an out and back you can just turn around whenever. if you have specific questions about hikes I'll try to help. Whitefish is nice "fancy" area. summer time you can hike up the ski resort and have beer at the top or ride the just ride the lift. but its probably hour from the Kalispel airport so you don't have to stay there. Hungry horse dam area is nice spot outside the park on the west side.Another thing to check before you come is highway construction. when they say expect delays they mean it.

good stuff, thank you very much.
I’m glad we decided to stay on the east side I really appreciate any measure of avoiding massive crowds. I’ve seen it in Yellowstone and Olympia, it’s not my scene.

A half hour north is the Gateway to the Mountains, which has a boat tour along the Missouri River
My great-grandparents moved from Ireland to York, MT, which is about 30 minutes north of Helena. The land is still in the family, we just don't get up there as much anymore.
The Mann Gulch and its history is truly amazing. The boat tour is cool, as they show you why they are called the Gates of the Mountains.
You can also hit Refrigerator Canyon on the way to Gate of the Mountains.

Home Ranch Bottoms near Polebridge is better than any of the places in Polebridge. Drinks, food, and live music. Bowman Lake up there is beautiful.
Did the Northern Lights Saloon when I was there. It looks very similar. I enjoyed Northern Lights, but it's nice to know there's another option if I'm ever back in that area - as I hope to be one day.
Bowman Lake is a mystically wonderful spot.
