When you see a whole bunch of guys sitting around a "random" spot on the roadside, you're about to go for a ride.
Also drove that thing through a flood.

Please note that any traffic accident in Mexico is a criminal offense. The police will detain you even if it isn’t your fault and you are likely to get shaken down. If it is your fault they can and will detain you and make you pay for repairs to the other vehicle on the spot.

Some resorts also add a "parking fee". If you are going for 5 days, but may only drive once or twice, just arrange a pick-up/drop off at the resort. Daily rate will be more expensive, but you won't have to deal with pick-up/drop-off at the airport and building an extra 2 hours into your travel schedule.

I've rented a car just about anywhere I have traveled in Mexico and fortunately I haven't had any major issues. I like the freedom that it affords to explore.

We've rented a few times in Tulum and Cancun. I think it was Hertz IIRC. We had no issues at all.

For the purposes the OP stated it’s not a great idea. Cancun gets fairly nasty once you get out of the hotel zone.

Traveling to Mexico is stupid

And let's be honest...driving in Mexico is a blast

From OP:
This is an easy drive, pretty much highway. Being able to drive to a non-touristy cenote or to a cheap taco stand is worth it IMO.
