When you see a whole bunch of guys sitting around a "random" spot on the roadside, you're about to go for a ride.

Also drove that thing through a flood.

That is enough to keep me from ever doing it.

Some resorts also add a "parking fee". If you are going for 5 days, but may only drive once or twice, just arrange a pick-up/drop off at the resort. Daily rate will be more expensive, but you won't have to deal with pick-up/drop-off at the airport and building an extra 2 hours into your travel schedule.

I've rented a car just about anywhere I have traveled in Mexico and fortunately I haven't had any major issues. I like the freedom that it affords to explore.

We've rented a few times in Tulum and Cancun. I think it was Hertz IIRC. We had no issues at all.

For the purposes the OP stated it’s not a great idea. Cancun gets fairly nasty once you get out of the hotel zone.

From OP:

Heading to Playa del Carmen via the Cancun airport. Staying at a resort.

This is an easy drive, pretty much highway. Being able to drive to a non-touristy cenote or to a cheap taco stand is worth it IMO.
