All the ports will have shops selling souvenirs. Many are owned by the crusie lines and relocate to warmer waters in winter. Before buying things try to find a shop with a window sign saying "locally owned". They are more common a short walk beyond the docks.

Juneau: Harv and Marvs whale watching. They are the best. Smaller boats and smaller groups with fantastic guides. We had 6 people total on the boat. We’d pass by boats with 50+ packed in like sardines.
100% agree on the big boat/small boat. We took Jayleen's Alaska and it was great. Her dad is one of the original Harv/Marv (not their real names) guys and I believe they sold out their business a few years ago. She grew up living on an island by Auke Bay and was taking her own skiff to town when she was 12. Her tour was fun and we saw whales. I think the boat would maybe hold 10 max? We had 6 people and it was great!

ETA a warning about Ketchikan - Don't pay good money to enter the house of ill repute only to be shocked to find out that it is not a house of ill repute anymore, but a museum.
Sounds like a story that should be shared.

Just curious, on a cruise in July, will the mosquitoes be unbearable?

That sounds right. I thought I remembered her talking about the whole island being off the grid. Such a unique way to grow up. You could really tell she loves Alaska.

Ketchikan is Alaskan Gatlinburg. Whole lot of tourist shops, t-shirts, keychains, etc... Bring a book.
Ya, after our kayak excursion we walked up the salmon stream following the fish, had a hot dog and chatted with locals at a high school baseball game, and sipped a draft beer at a local bar on the wharf.
Don’t even get off the boat.

Good advice. I did a little research and it looks like you would access the glacier through the Mendenhall Glacier visitor center. Is this correct?
Also, does the blue bus drop you off close to this. I read somewhere that the bus drop was 1.5 miles away. Is that correct?

It’s looking like Juneau and Skagway are the ports with the most to do. So I may try whale watching in Icy Straight. Are there any particular companies that you’ve had good experiences with or have heard good things about?

Anything interesting other than fishing in Ketchikan?

Piggybacking off of this topic. What company is most recommended for this cruise? Looking for one that does flight and cruise. Thanks.

We didn't go to the visitor center at all. So NO,m you do not access the glacier through the visitor center. You just walk down the trail to Nugget Falls. It's about a mile. Easy walk.
I see the website says the city bus drops off 1.5 miles from the visitor center. The blue bus and the city bus are not the same thing. We took a taxi because we went after 6pm and the buses don't run in the evening. We definitely didn't walk 1.5 miles to get to the park. The taxi dropped us off at the place where you pay to get in.

I have been to Mendenhall Glacier twice and both times we were dropped off at the visitor's center and viewed the glacier from the platform. Some people were hiking to it or getting there by boat, but we didn't do that.
