Good advice. I did a little research and it looks like you would access the glacier through the Mendenhall Glacier visitor center. Is this correct?
Also, does the blue bus drop you off close to this. I read somewhere that the bus drop was 1.5 miles away. Is that correct?

Correct regarding the city bus but the path is easy

Shuttle buses have scheduled pickups and drops every 30 min I believe, and they drop ff near the visitors center

Another Roger question:

I’ve hike up Mount Roberts to the tram several times.
This time we will have a lot of time in Juneau.
Is it worth the extra 2 miles each way to go to Gastineau Peak?

If the visibility is decent I say yes

Was thinking along those lines.
We have talked about going to Mendenhall bus “tours” are expensive for nothing but a ride. Taxis recommend advance reservations and come out at $40/person for just a ride.
And the public bus will likely be packed.

Thanks!

Its really not too bad usually.

I have been hiking up to Granite Creek, it uses the same trail system as Perseverance. Its the first spur to the right after the Mt Juneau trail.

You can access Mt Juneau ridge from there if you choose. Mt Juneau is a bit harder than Roberts.

quote:

A side trail from Perseverance that breaks off 2 miles into the hike, this trail is generally muddy because of the beautiful waterfalls and snow that resides on the mountains until early summer. (And there’s extreme avalanche danger in winter.) But it’s a great day hike, and if you keep to the left you can access the alpine high country of Mount Juneau. There are beautiful alpine lakes and wildflowers along the way as you gain over 1,200 feet in elevation.

Taxis should not be $40 per person. I know things have gone up since we went 5 years ago, but we paid $40 each way for a van that all 4 of us could ride in. We did go in then evening, like 5 pm. We did not have a reservation. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd chance it on the taxi and not make a reservation. Go later in the day and walk to Nugget Falls.

They aren't. They can charge a flat rate but its split between passengers.

Just returned yesterday. We went snorkeling with Snorkel Alaska in Ketchikan. Small shop, great guys, three guides with about a dozen swimmers. They provide everything, and have hot showers on return.
We saw lots of sea stars, various jellies, urchins, fish and crabs. Bald eagles overhead and whale spouts in the harbor we were in.

Hoping this thread keeps going. Planning this trip next year and trying to figure out which company to go with. If it's better to go direct with the cruise company or through an independent travel agent/Costco Travel. Seems like Princess is usually the go to for access to the glaciers.

We did 13 Princess about 10 yrs ago. Loved Mendenhall glacier and long boat ride to fjiords. It was very cold in middle of summer. Saw numerous whales and orcas and eagles and small hedgehog. Went into Yukon, old saloon turned eatery with dirt & saw dust floors. We took an excursion to hopefully walk on glacier on Mt Everest. We suited up and rode and could not land as it was partly cloudy and not safe to take off after landing. My most enjoyable was sounds of glaciers calving. I had been hearing sounds and thought it was approaching weather but upon sights that morning it was absolutely awesome from our balcony. Enjoyed numerous days of international foods and desserts. Never same thing as on cheaper cruise lines. Took excursion to ice house and had martinis sitting on ice bar stools covered with fur seat. We then journeyed to a hot spring for lil swimming and greeting folks.
Princess also took us to Denali Park for 7 days and stayed at Princess Lodge. Rode double decker train back to Victoria for flight back home. Just greatest time ever. Worth every dollar for trip on Princess Cruise Line. Hope to take one to Baltic Countries.

Tidewater Glaciers in Southeast are in Tracy Arm, Glacier Bay, and Icy Bay.

Prince William Sound has a lot of you go across gulf.

Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm are my two favorite places in Southeast. Both are fjords with tidewater glaciers. They both originate in the same bay, but most cruise ships take Tracy Arm and not Endicott Arm.

Glacier Bay is pretty awesome too, but I would not do that in a large ship. Just personal preference, because you''ll not be able to probe around most of the bay in a larger ship.

In addition to cruise ships, Southeast Alaska also has a lot of small ship cruises and yacht cruises. You spend less in cities and more kayaking, hiking, etc and can spend two days in Glacier Bay.

We’re disembarking tomorrow. Seven days on princess sapphire. Great experience.

Ketchikan take the nature walk through rainforest. About an hour or two. It’s going to rain. Goretex rain suit. Eagles. Bears. Fauna.

Juneau do the whale watch, a couple of hours. Then walk to Mendenhall glacier. Phenomenal.

Skagway. The best experience for our trip was the White Pass and Yukon railroad up into Yukon. Breathtaking views. Outstanding history. Bus tour into Yukon and back to Skagway. Stop in Carcross. Highly recommend. The train was by far our favorite.

We disembark tomorrow. McKinley lodge, then Denali, and finally Fairbanks. I hope the land tour is as good as the cruise.

It’s a wonderful place. Take plenty of pictures.

Best wishes and safe travels.

In beautiful Juneau right now.

Been up since 3am taking in the ride in.

Hiking Mr Roberts in about an hour.

Not a cloud in the sky. High of 72 today.

Edit: at the tram at Mt Roberts trail. Tram down is closed. Beautiful up here.

Hiked to what we think is the hang glider launch place. Unbelievable view. Hike back down was rigorous for an old guy but stunning.

Sitting on balcony watch the float planes take off and land right in front of us sipping gin drinks.

Just got back from a similar itinerary except we went to Sitka instead of Skagway.
Juneau: I would check out the town
Icy Strait: Whale Watching. We did this in Juneau and missed seeing much of the town. The town of Hoonah doesn't have too much to see/do.
Ketchikan: We went salmon fishing and had a great experience. We kept 15 in a half day of fishing and threw back at least 30.

You picked a great day to be in port. Warmest day of the year, nice little sea breeze.

We did Perseverance yesterday to Granite Creek, the mt Roberts trailhead looked pretty crowded.

Starting to plan an Alaskan cruise next July. A couple of questions for those that have been.
- Is a helicopter tour worth the $$$?
- Is it worth the extra $$ for a balcony?
- is a one way trip from Seattle/Vancouver to Anchorage better than a round trip Seattle/Vancouver?
- As far as cruise lines go we don't really care about top shelf food or drink, but want to make sure we have the best itinerary. Is they a particular one that is better than others?
