What do you want to do? There's virtually unlimited options.

Helicoptor tours, whale watching, hiking, ice climbing, food tours, etc.

See Mendenhall Glacier and take the whale watching tour that circles Shelter Island.

Skagway
Take the long tour in to the Yukon Territory that includes a ride on the White Pass Railroad train.

Ketchikan
We usually just hang around town.

ETA a warning about Ketchikan - Don't pay good money to enter the house of ill repute only to be shocked to find out that it is not a house of ill repute anymore, but a museum.

You have to do some kind of whale watching tour. I am fascinated by them and seeing them up close is incredible. You will see plenty from the cruise ship but you don’t realize how high up and far away you are from them until you get on a much smaller tour boat.

There are really no wrong answers. I’ve done 2 Alaskan cruises and can’t wait to go back.

For his itinerary, Icy Straight Point or Juneau would be the best locations.

Just curious, on a cruise in July, will the mosquitoes be unbearable?

Look into Chilkoot Tours. They do this better than the cruise lines. They use smaller buses so you aren't with that many people. Do the one that does the train one way and the bus the other.

If you want more activity, there are lots of hiking ones from Skagway.

You don't need a tour to do Mendenhall Glacier. It's just outside of Juneau and you can take a taxi or the bus. They you are on your own time and not having to be with a big group.

If you can't tell, I hate tours with huge groups and big buses.

Yep, don't do a tour with the Mendenhall Glacier, take the blue bus or city bus.

Hiking to the waterfall takes 45 min to an hour, most tours only give people about 45 minutes at the glacier.

Shouldnt

The mosquito problem isnt as bad in Southeast due to topography. Lots of water, just not standing water.

Skagway, the history is front and center. As a history buff, its my favorite place in Southeast.

The cemeteries are interesting. I usually go over to Dyea to the snowslide cemetery and look for brown bear.

Went on Alaskan cruise last year.

Juneau: Harv and Marvs whale watching. They are the best. Smaller boats and smaller groups with fantastic guides. We had 6 people total on the boat. We’d pass by boats with 50+ packed in like sardines.

Skagway: White pass railroad

Haines: didn’t pass through here

Icy strait: Extreme definition of tourist trap. Town of Hoonah is a few miles away and is pretty much a dump.

Ketchikan: we went fishing with baranof fishing excursions. Was a good time. After this we just walked around town.

Fantastic trip overall. Just booked another one for next year.

As far as towns go, its amazing.

I'd go to the State Park north of the Ferry Terminal and watch the brown bears fish.

Then just walk the town, its gorgeous and unique. One of the last bastions of small town, non corporate America.

I find this funny.

Hoonah is a traditional native village and has incredible bear and whale watching opportunities. Chichagof Island has some of the best access due to extensive logging roads.

People with no sense of adventure should skip Hoonah. Those who want to see the big brown bears will find it interesting. Chichagof is an outdoorsmans paradise.

Juneau harbor (at least Auk Bay where I sailed out of) is a 20 minute cab from the airport, verify where you are sailing from and figure out transport. Auk bay is beautiful though.

Ketchikan is Alaskan Gatlinburg. Whole lot of tourist shops, t-shirts, keychains, etc... Bring a book.

Overall this is a terrific trip. Have a great time.

Auke Bay.

That is a beautiful place and there are plenty of whales there. The whale watching excursion I recommend that circles Shelter Island is in Auke Bay.

Yep, we had humpbacks near shore in Auke Bay yesterday morning. Shelter is just beyond the entrance of the Bay up in Lynn Canal.

Make sure you stop at Tracy Kings in Juneau for the King Crab. It’s expensive but worth every penny
