I won't say I'm a fan of Vegas but I'm not against going once every 5-10 years either.
Great food and entertainment options available, as well as high end accommodations. Once your buzz wears off it's kind of a depressing, soulless place, but I've never really stayed long enough for that feeling to take hold.

I'm headed to Vegas in november for a work conference and have set my expectations low based on this thread. I'm there for 6 days/5 nights so if I get that feeling of misery that's been reported here I'll let y'all know

The outdoor life in the area is amazing. I find Louisiana boring but I hate mosquitos and humidity

Vegas has always been a good base for a cheap hotel to explore what surrounds it. If you use it that way, it’s pretty great. Lots of amazing natural scenery within an easy drive. As for doing stuff around the city, I find it extremely depressing and yes it does suck.

I can tolerate it.
I agree, a week is way too long in Sin City.
I thought it was overwhelming at first. Had no idea what to do or where to go. Plus I will never eat one of those buffets ever again, way too much food to even enjoy.
The second and third times I've been has been a much better experience as you acquire certain places you like to go and the restaurants that I enjoy the most.
I don't gamble either.
It can be very expensive so it just depends on what you really want to do and see. Pick one show or concert depending on whose in town.
A good day excursion breaks up the trip as well. We did the Hoover Dam Tour and the plan is to eventually do the Grand Canyon tour as well.

I'm with you. I've had a good time going with friends who new promoters and got us tables for free, but we still had to buy the outrageously priced bottles. It's fun but no where near economical. I'd prefer different cities, I can get drunk and party at any city in the world and loud shows/concerts with light shows aren't really my thing.
ETA: The cirque shows and musicals are great, but I can find that in better cities

i found it totally depressing. i stayed at the mirage and went to casino expecting this:
instead it was this
clearly the mirage casino is not where the tuxedo and hooker-heel women hang out or else vegas advertising doesn't live up to reality.

If you can't have fun at the sports book, the pools, the casinos, restaurants, and nightlife that shits on you.
If you live in the southeast, you sure as hell don't have to go to Vegas to get a lot of this, and you don't pay through the nose for some of the fees mentioned here.

the pools,
this is actually the only thing i enjoyed last october (and plan to this october as well) which is showing up back home with a suntan/sunburn and seeing the reaction on my wife's face.
honestly it was about the only thing to do that didn't involve gangs of asians or fat people on scooters. the casinos i went in were all
i'd rather pay for the giant $25 margarita and sit by the pool for a couple hours watching the bachelorette parties come and go.

Everything WAY over priced,
It’s not just you. Used to be normal restaurant prices or a little lower (to bring folks in). Now, the prices shock me- and I say that as a Californian. It’d be one thing to pay a bit of a premium but get elegance/superb service in return. Instead, you have to deal with a sea of tattooed, drunk humanity to eat a $60 choice steak. No thanks. That said, some strip restaurants are superb. When I have to go to Vegas (friends/family want to go or business travel), I try to stay at the SLS. It’s off the strip and has some great restaurants. Parking is close to the lobby and secure and, despite a low price for rooms, attracts a nicer crowd by offering Los Angeles based restaurant staples.

Right
Fat people = poor. They inhabit casinos with low limits and penny slots

You are doing the wrong stuff in Vegas. That is your problem. Plenty of great food in Vegas. Step away from the $20 buffet
