I remember when I first started going there (about 15 years ago), they used to beg you to go there with cheap flights/hotels.

Our flights were $150, round trip, when I went. This was late 90's on Southwest.

We stayed at the MGM Grand in a small suite for $100 per night, but one guy with us worked in the hotel industry and got some employee rate somehow.

I wouldn’t say it sucks. But I do think it is an overrated destination.

When was Vegas ever not a 2-4 night destination where you know it's going to be over the top? Y'all are acting like it used to be some subtle retreat then turned into a nightlife and exorbitant place.

Prices really aren't all that different now in real dollars than what you just described.

I know exactly what Vegas is and I find it overrated.

If it’s your type of thing fine.

Not really. I just checked 2 random weekends in October and November, and similar flight times were almost $1,000 round trip on Southwest. Almost 10 times more expensive.

Nah, old school operators and mob influence are waning, it's just a corporate shite show now. It doesn't suck, but it's not what it used to be

specially applies to The Strip, then some to the Fremont Experience Area....although more like the old Vegas.

The old Las Vegas is INSIDE the city, off The Strip.

Birmingham. Same place I flew there from for $150 round trip in late 90's. Back then, SW always had cheap flights from Bham to Vegas, Chicago and Baltimore for some reason.

That said, it is considerably cheaper from Atlanta - around $400. So that increase isn't all that unreasonable.

I have a friend that is stationed there in the Air Force, and he said for some reason a lot of the cheap direct flights were dropped a couple of years ago. Maybe simply due to demand? I'm not sure. Yes, it now seems to be much more just another place to fly where as 5+ years ago there were routinely dirt cheap directs.

Hotels and everything else have simply gone up with inflation. We just haven't adjusted to a $100 hotel in 1995 now being $200.

Probably due to it just being a lot more expensive to operate an airline now than it was pre 9/11. It doest really make sense to have direct flight from Birmingham to Vegas for cheap when Atlanta is so close and has so much more traffic.

I never studied it out, but I always assumed the really cheap SW flights from Bham went away after SW started flying out of Atlanta.

I'm pretty sure I got tickets to Chicago from Bham for around $39 each way a few times back then. We'd fly in, go to a Cubs game, stay up all night partying, then fly home the next morning. Flights now around closer to $200 one way to Chicago, unless you book way in advance.

I go there because it is a great base for a road trip, nothing else. The last time I was there I walked down the strip and played a little blackjack and concluded that I belong to a different species than the people I saw there.

It's one of those places that is absolutely incredible if someone else is paying for everything and can be absolutely miserable if you are worrying about every dollar.

I have a hard time going back bc I have been absolutely spoiled going there and once you experience the top it is hard to come back.

exactly!

if you work in an industry that has trade shows or conferences periodically in Vegas, and your company is footing the bill for hotel and food, then Vegas is amazing. I spent a week there in January before the Super Bowl a few years ago and only had to pay for gambling and drinks. It was a lot of fun that week.

Vegas is the greatest. If I’m with friends or with my kids, I’ve never had a bad day. Eat at the best restaurants, best hotels, great customer service, always sunny, great pools, fun gambling, concerts and golf.

A 4 day trip to Vegas is plenty. We have enough fun in 4 days to last a month.

Do some research there is a lot in Vegas outside of the casinos....but you will need a car. From a "dam" to "mountains"

Yes, The Strip is a multitude of pricey Corporations now. INSIDE the city casinos / restaurants are more reasonable.

I know this thread is a few months old, but just got back from Vegas yesterday. I’m not going to say it completely sucked, but I can see how people thinks it’s overrated as hell. I really wanted to like it, but I just wasn’t into it.

It won’t hurt my feelings if we never went back. Lots of people. Lots of walking. If you’re not gambling, it’s a lot of looking around and watching. We’ve had fun but having casinos here in Lake Charles sort of takes the shine off of it. It’s very upscale. We can say we’ve been but we’ve had better vacations. We saw LOVE at the Mirage and it was amazing. The only things we really enjoyed was the Beatles show and a couple restaurants which all in all wasn’t worth all the money we ended up spending. I enjoyed the sportsbook

Give it about a 5 out of 10.

love the roving bands of asian tourists with leaders carrying different colored flags so they don't get mixed up in...the other roving bands of asian tourists with leaders carrying flags.

literally you can't move down the street with all this. best to go back inside your casino and have a drink.

not a fan either.
