Already in the VERY early stages of planning a trip for Summer of next year and have been kicking some ideas around. We know we want it to include Barcelona 100%. We were deciding between two potential itineraries and if they both sound dumb or if you would change up in any way I am very open to suggestions. Trip would be in June bc that’s typically the month every year our schedules line up so we take an international trip every year. It would just be wife and I and we are working with about 10ish days. Neither of us have ever been to the places I’ll list below.

Itinerary 1: Fly into Barcelona. Spend 4ish days. Catch regional flight over to Nice , France and spend another 4-5 ish days exploring the French Riviera. Fly home from Nice.

Itinerary 2: Fly into Barcelona - spend 3-4 ish days. Train to Madrid for 1.5-2 ish days to do a little sightseeing and see a bullfight. Regional flight to Lisbon Portugal .. then spend 3-4 ish days there before flying home out of Lisbon.

We love to sight see. Enjoy local culture in places we’ve never been. Try alll the good food. Bar scenes and nightlife is not an interest of ours at all. Also to note we are going to Italy this upcoming summer and will spend the bulk of our time on the Amalfi coast based in Positano. Bc of this we are slightly leaning towards Itinerary 2 bc we feel like the sights of the French Riviera may be similar to Amalfi coast.

Appreciate any advice or feedback from those of you in have visited this part of the world. Thanks in advance.

I prefer option 1. But I like more time at destinations than more destinations for less time

If you choose option 2 I would do Seville instead of Madrid. Fantastic city and if you stay along the river the bull fighting arena is a short walk away.

Ya I did a Barcelona and Seville split before. The OP may even be able to add a third stop in Spain as well.

I know you want opinions on your 2 itineraries. So I will say this, my personal preference is to stay "within countries" for multiple stops. It just makes everything easier. Same language, etc

Of the two however, I would probably pick 1 just because it will be a much more leisurely trip. It would be a better trip.

Now...

I would just stay in Spain, and do Bareclona, Seville (Seville is fricking awesome!), and if its easier to fly out of Madrid do a short stay in Madrid.

I'd do Portugal on its own trip. But that's just me

I would probably pick #2.

I have been to both the French Riviera and the Amalfi Coast. Both were wonderful but if I had to choose one to go back to it would be the Amalfi Coast.

We were on the verge of booking a Viking River cruise to Portugal and the Douro River but we ended up choosing another one. Portugal may be next on our list.

We loved Barcelona.

Between the two, Portuguese sounds like a blend of Spanish, Italian, and a sprinkling of French, and it's hard for me to grok. I'd much rather deal with the switch between Spanish and French. But I think you can get the riviera experience in Marseille (minus super yachts) or elsewhere. The only bad part of the train trip from Marseille to Barca was the local train that we had to take just out of Marseille. It appears to have been replaced primarily with the Renfe. And, you'll get to see a ton of the French nuke plants on the way.

That said, my ex in-laws spent a month split 15-85 between Madrid and Portugal and ate their asses off.

I really appreciate the feedback. Gonna give Seville a good look. It’s been brought up a few times on here. I’ve always heard Madrid is kinda lame.

I was always told Madrid was for business. Seems to check out, because it’s not apparent who in Barca that doesn’t work retail is actually working in the summer.

Madrid is a really great food and art city, but as has been said a few times, Seville is really special.

I the summer, I wouldn't go to Madrid or Seville, both are too damn hot and I want cool weather. Lisbon is amazing and a nice temp so I would, and I think I have, done Barcelona and flown to Lisbon.

I will admit I am biased against Nice. The first time I tried to go there while exploring France on the weekend (was working in southern France) I could not find a parking place. Anywhere. It was apparently Carnival and I had no idea. The second time I went with my family while on vacation and my rental car got broken into. I will never return to Nice. It was not nice to me.

I like it fine, but it's not a must see. It's primarily known for its rock beaches, which Americans, as a rule, don't enjoy. I certainly wouldn't talk anyone out of going, but I would never try to talk someone into going, either.

Thank you all so much for the feedback. Very good info. I think I’ll add Seville to the itinerary and possibly axe Madrid.
