Hope everyone is having a great weekend and happy mothers day to the moms out there . Figured I'd take a trip down to my moms in Florida for mothers day so found a decently cheap fare $200 from JFK-FLL-JFK nonstop on Delta.

Noticed when I woke up this morning Delta cancelled the 7am Laguardia - Miami flight and the 11am JFK - Ft Lauderdale flight. Then around 9am got notice they cancelled my 3:30pm JFK - Ft Lauderdale flight. While I don't know the reasoning behind the cancellations (weather is nice in the northeast and florida), I'll try to post my suggestions for rebooking below.

The automatic rebooking option rebooked me on JFK-ATL-FLL for tomorrow morning 5/15 at 6am. Since I had to take two trains and the airtrain to get out to JFK from NJ, I used the FlyDelta app to look up options for today. The remaining nonstops from JFK and LGA today into Miami, West Palm Beach, and Ft Lauderdale were starting to fill up or already full so I looked up connecting options from Newark. Saw a 12:15pm flight connecting in Atlanta with 1 hr 10 min connection to a flight to Ft Lauderdale. Clicked on rebook and bam, flights rebooked.

If I had called into Delta, I guarantee I would have waited for 10-20 minutes for an agent then another 20 minutes for the flight to be reticketed. Your best option if a flight cancels is to first look at the app. The app will automatically figure out the reticketing options rather than waiting on hold. On the flydelta app, you can rebook flights multiple times if you see something pop up better. In my case today, I found the best option and have no need to keep browsing.

If the app doesn't work, my suggestion is to find an agent (if you're at the airport). While you're waiting in line, try tweeting the airline (@Delta) saying your flight was cancelled and you need help getting rebooked. You can also call the airlines in the meantime and wait on hold there. Essentially, explore all avenues of communication rather than waiting on one specific avenue because the flight inventory may be gone in an instant and you may end up waiting until the following day.

If the airline cancels a flight and it's their fault, you can ask for a hotel voucher if you end up having to spend the night. Make sure you have all your meds with you in case you need access to things from your bag.

Hope this helps a few of you, happy to try and answer any specific questions if you've got them

Eta: Found out the flight was cancelled due to 'No Crew'. I'll write in and get some miles out of this

Pop into Bimini Bar once you’re out of the airport in FLL, it’s magical.

Apparently, there is a shortage of air traffic controllers in NYC and DC from May until September. All of the Airlines have to reduce flights into JFK, LGA, Ewr, DCA and IAD. They have known about this since February. Instead of reducing the schedule back then they are waiting until the day before and are cutting the least profitable flights.

Also if you booked the trip using a travel cc they might be able to help, or depending on the travel insurance would pay for the room and anything you need to buy because of the calcellation

This is true as well. I know the airlines have started cutting schedules to NYC area for June and July so far

Today the cancellations are fully on Delta not having flight crew to operate their schedule. They should have reduced flights for their own internal purposes besides the FAA suggestions

This is good advice as well! In the past when my flights been cancelled and I had to buy ski clothes in Vail, American covered all expenses as long as I sent in itemized receipts. Got about $600 worth of new ski stuff

Before I opened this thread I said “I’ll bet anything LGA is involved with this canceled flight.”

Sure enough.

I honestly don’t know what it is about LGA but I go through there a good bit and I never land on time and my flights never take off when they’re supposed to.

you knew. I've had good luck out of LGA recently, JFK has been a shitshow with Delta moving operations solely into T4. I'm wondering if this becomes even worse for memorial day weekend...

The amount of people that don't start with this step is always amazing.

How much of a disaster is it actually? The bloggers are acting like the sky is falling.

We're flying through JFK in June, land around noon on Delta (Terminal 4) and depart around 9:00p on Air France (Terminal 1). Was planning on going into the city but wondering if we should just stay at the airport and lounge hop/check out the TWA hotel

Agreed, calling in isn't what it used to be. Before Covid it was the way to get preferred treatment, now you have a 3 hour wait.

In a recent snafu I looked at what the app had rebooked me to, then made some adjustments, and it worked out OK. Your best bet now is to modify the initial rebook through teh app.

NOt the most fun at 4am when you are in a cab to the airport but realistic nontheless.

Of the four JFK-FLL flights today, the 7am was delayed 2 hrs, the 11am cancelled, the 330pm cancelled, and the 745pm is 25 min early. I know it's a specific example but still not good in my books. Sky isn't falling but Delta has this happen roughly once a month and this is all besides weather issues.

Morning flights are always the way to go to NYC so you're playing it smart. Have you ever been to the TWA hotel? I loved my two visits there, they've got a nice gym, comfy beds, the rooftop pool, bar. Might be worth a day rate to book especially for the nostalgia

Never been to the TWA Hotel. Was planning to go to Red Farm in the city for late lunch/early dinner but with the AirTrain construction I'm not sire if it's in the cards

I'm getting back to JFK at 6:45pm Friday evening. I can let you know how long the T4 to Airtrain to LIRR to Penn Station process takes given the current construction if you're interested? Google maps says 55 min from T4 so I'll use that as my baseline.

Another question would be what do you plan to do with your belongings like backpack/carryon?

That would be great. Given that we would be heading back to the airport around rush hour, the train seems like the only option that makes sense vs a cab/Uber.

We likely won't have carry ons as we will through check our bags from DFW all the way to BRU. My office is a block from GCT so I may leave my laptop bag there

This is nerve racking to read. My wife will be flying msy-jfk-fco (Rome) in June and back from Paris-JFK-MSY in July. I hope they dont mess this up. She is flying alone and going overseas for the first time. She is meeting up with her sister in Rome since sister lives in Washington and not Louisiana.

Had it happen last June headed out of O'hare for Milan, IT. It was a PITA for sure. They cancelled it after delaying about three hours, so there was a mad scramble of humanity at 1:00 AM to get to the counter.

I stood in line for about 30 minutes and then started getting notifications on the app that they were opening up another flight midday the next day and we had confirmed seats. They sent food vouchers good for a two day window in that particular airport (we had to work hard to spend the $300 between the 6 of us in my fam), for I believe $50 apiece.

I quickly booked a hotel on airport grounds since we weren't leaving until midday tbe next day, and when I got back from the trip, after much time on the phone and email exchanges, they paid me for the airport hotel that night, and also paid a partial reimbursement of an pay in advance event we missed because of the cancellation.

Initially tried to say flight was not cancelled just postponed, but we countered with different flight numbers, same regular flight leaving again later that day, etc and they paid.

Something to also consider in cities with multiple airports is that when they automatically rebook you for a cancelled flight it will be at the same airport. You will have to go find the options from other airports that might be better.

Had a morning flight from Denver to Hobby cancelled and rebooked for the next day, Found a better flight into IAH for the same day that I got on and earned some vouchers for the inconvenience
