What do you bring home?

I get to go on international work trips, but never know what to bring home to my wife and kid. What do you look for when bringing something special home to your family from where you are visiting?

I usually buy something specific to the location.
In South Africa I got a carved ostrich egg, in London I got a bottle of whiskey from the Churchill War Rooms, in Paris I got a pillow case from a place she really likes that started there, in Thailand I got a khon mask, etc.
I prefer something unique to the place instead of getting the same thing from everywhere.

Get the kids candy and snacks. They are amazingly different around the world.

Your gift list is very similar to mine. I did mule back about 10 kilos of chocolate from Belgium when I was done with that job, that's about as conventional I got. I got something carved in Joburg, Japan is a layup for unique gifts, etc.

This.
I also bring home low denomination bills from wherever I visit, the kids have amassed quite the collection of over the years. In some countries, it's amazing how many paper bills you can bring home just from exchanging a single $50 USD bill - see below for Mexican pesos.
$20 MXN ~$1.17 USD

$50 MXN ~$2.93 USD

$100 MXN ~$5.86 USD

$200 MXN ~$11.72 USD

$500 MXN ~$29.30 USD

I always bring my wife some sort of decoration. I have brought back decorative bowls/vases, carved wood/rock figurines, stuff like that. I know the style she likes.
For my kids - I have brought back stuffed animals, local candy, clothes.
My son's favorite item was a soccer jersey from Spain.
My daughter has an outfit from Brazil she fancies.
My wife liked a marble elephant I got from India.
They also know that I do not always bring them home something. I go on a lot of trips, and I won't buy something if I don't think it will mean something.

most of the "souvenir" stuff is crap. But the "gift" is really more supposed to just show that you were thinking about them while you were away.
Get them interested in collecting something random (and easy to find) whenever they are on trips. My parents have done shot glasses and they have a display for them in the bar area of their house. We do magnets and display them on a metal board covered with fabric and a frame. We used to do lapel pins, but they are hard to find a lot of places. Back in the day, people used to do spoons (don't do that).

Fridge magnets work for me, cheap, don't take up space, and everytime you open the fridge you are reminded of the experience

I always travel with the wife and we don't have kids so whenever we bring stuff back it's for her parents.
- local jewelry for her mom
- her dad has a crazy sock collection mostly from us
Something cool we received from a visitor from S Africa was an assortment of spices.

We take rocks from everywhere we go. I've got an area in my backyard where i've got some potted flowers over a rock bed (small white rocks from the store) and that's where we put all those larger rocks. There's probably 100 of them in the rock bed, and i can distinctly remember where about 1/3 of them came from, and can give good guess on most of them. I can typically tell if it came from Colorado or Tennessee, and then there's a few that stand out that I can say exactly where we got them from.
My favorite one is one I found on the coast in Laguna Beach, CA. It's not really a rock, but a formation of shells all stuck together to make a rock about the size of a basketball.
We've got rocks from Tenn, NC, Maine, New Hampshire, Toronto, a lot from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, TX, FL, Vancouver, from the island the Statue of Liberty is on, Vegas, Cancun, Tulum, Cozumel, and more.

I used to play golf much more as a young guy. Thus, I started collecting golf balls from locations I visited beginning about 25 years ago. I don't play golf much these days, but I still collect golf balls. They are relatively cheap, easy to pack, and look good in a display box.
If I'm getting something for the kids, I always get hoodies.

I used to bring a rock back from each state when I was trucking. Placed them in a rock garden and like you, I can remember where I got most of them.

For myself, something small like flags or souvenirs. Hats sometimes.
For friends...
Maybe local chocolates, cookies, liquors.
Wife will buy like souvenir plates, place mats, winter hats.
