What are good tricks for finding cheap flights & destinations?

I know Google flights. But what if you don't have a destination in mind. You just want cheap flights and build from there.
A way to search a range of destinations and dates?
Like to see where I can go for $800 pt international. And $300 or less domestic.
Trying to plan a family trip and a couple trip.

Just sign up for Scott's Cheap Flights. (might be called Going now)

I just did. $39 for the year. I'll give it a shot.
I selected MSY, IAH, ATL, IAD and EWR as my airports because I know of cheap daily shuttles to all those airports.

Yea. Google flights does this too

I get emails from the airlines announcing sales events. I typically have a few destinations in mind beforehand and price comparison shop the sales event for flights, and then check rental car prices on Costco Travel and hotel prices via their apps.

Doesn’t google flights have an “explore” option? Where you don’t have to select a destination

Not to hijack but is there a sweet spot on how far out y’all book. ? Been eyeballing flights to Vancouver around Christmas for a ski trip but they’re pretty steep right now. (No pun intended)

3 to 6 months usually. I feel like too far in advance you pay too much.

Google Flights and just search around you can find plenty based on orice for an area. I found one recently the South America for 400

I use all the sites like Google, Kayak, etc. Love the app Hopper.
If you want to find that really low price and don't care, then I'd highly recommend subscribing to FareDrop. I had a subscription to Scott's, but like this site better. You get notices of deals all the time from your targeted airports. Really nice service.
One example: ATL to Calgary in May - $243 roundtrip.
FareDrop took me to Google Flights.

Flight prices to Europe absolutely suck right now. Was going to book a fjords cruise in August but the damned flights are as much as the cruitse for 3 people.

I'm seeing them in the 7-800s for most months. Depends on destination. Though you can fly to a major city and then cheapo air the rest of way.
I was looking at London, but Helinski was 250 cheaper. Well the Helsinki to and from had a London layover. I almost feel like booking a fight and not taking the whole thing.

This is what we do. We have e-mails from some of the major airlines (SW, Delta, AA, United), and when there is a deal in the window we want to travel we start price comparisons.

For the cruise we'd want I'd have to fly into Copenhagen from IAD and flights are very limited and expensive. I could get about $650 a person but I do not fly on budget airlines. By the time they nickel and dime you there really isn't any savings and it's a freaking budget airline which I don't like.
ETA: It looks like I can use miles on Air France out of Dulles to get to Copenhagen. They'll be in economy but I'll survive.
The reason for the angst over this trip is that we are turning around and going to Italy for 17 days in September and that is going to be an expensive trip and I just don't want to go nuts on the fjords cruise right before the Italy trip.

For iOS, try the "Escape" app.
You can do anything if you're willing to risk a 6:35AM departure and multiple connections domestically, and willing to spend 10+ hours getting to somewhere that would have been a 2 hour direct flight.
Internationally, you can do nearly anything if you're willing to have 30+ hour transit times to Europe or Asia, including potentially having to leave security in an international airport to claim and re-check your luggage.
People that are willing to do such things are the ones that end up sleeping on airport floors.
ETA: I just saw your recent trip post re AMS/CDG, so I don't think you want to be the kind of person to do what I'm describing, but your dollar limits are going to be hard to do without scheduling compromises.

No, no, no. Do not try this. Airlines will smoke you.
Especially when you have to hit a different airline that isn't English based, they will exploit your uncomfortableness to get you to leave. (they all speak English, whether they tell you or not.) I've had problems dealing with Star Alliance customer service being *A gold, but I also have horror stories about EU/Turkish flight connections which I shall not belabor you with.
There's an around the world series from at to Paris (2700 Euro from Paris, to North America, New Zealand, Asia, and back to Paris for in business., and I'm worried about the flights to/from CDG & IAH on a different ticket that will get me ... eh., screwed.
