For those who have done this, what are your recommendations?

Booked with a travel agency. They used Europe express and booked the small group tours for the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica experience. Also used the for the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill Essential Experience. We only had 6 or 8 in the group and we moved pass all of the lines quickly. You can also use them for rail tickets and hotels. I would go this route again.

For the Vatican, we did a self-guided tour and it was great.

For everything else in Rome, we had a guide.

I’ve done both. Both are great. The guided tour you will miss some things, but you will learn things you wouldn’t in the self guided. Self-guided you can go at your own pace and see as much as you want.

I have also done both. The first time I went to the Vatican we had a tour that included St Peter’s, the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. It was very good but it was a little rushed because of time constraints. With the audioguide you can stay as long as you want and go at your own pace.

Would recommend a guided tour, get someone that’s highly knowledgeable about all of it and you’ll be amazed at how much you’d have missed otherwise. Was really glad we got a guide when we went.

Do a guided tour. We ended up having a private tour just my wife and I on our honeymoon and it worked perfectly.

Food the guided tour. Small group was really nice. Spent a long time in the sistine chapel and was served dinner at the end once everything was closed.
