Get a condo on the beach and that has a nice pool. Your kid will love the pool

As to Disney, do the Disney cruise instead of going to one of the parks. There's stuff for the adults plus supervised daycare with plenty of activities, shows, pools, rides, good food, etc. I never wanted to go on a cruise but went on that one with my daughter when she was 6 and it was actually a good experience. My daughter loved it.

When?

If it's warm, go to GSM national park.

Cliff jumping (the sinks)and tubing, fishing, hiking... Shows/attractions in nearby Gatlinburg/pigeon forge. Plenty of cool historical stuff in the area to show him too. Also cabins in the area are pretty cheap. We got a 3BR for $90 a night.

I second the ski trip. Kids catch on super quickly with their low center of gravity and they love playing in the snow.

You can easily ditch them for the day with ski lessons if you want to.

Camp/kayak The Buffalo and you could hit up Silver Dollar City & Branson along with it.
LINK

Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge is great family fun but I’d recommend setting up shop in Wears Valley especially with the new bypass.
LINK

Phoenix is actually a great family trip with plenty to see and do that is nothing like Louisiana.

A Virginia roadtrip is really cool (Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, VA Beach (b4trashy). You could return along the eastern coast and stop in Kitty Hawk, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Savannah...

When my kid is around that age I'd like to take him to California and hit up Legoland and Seaworld.

For a kid that young? Something like Great Wolf Lodge which has water slides and other activities.

It’s like the Chuck E Cheese of vacations but small kids love it.

5 is a good age for Sea World since they should be out of a stroller and you can take breaks by sitting and watching shows. They also have a small water park for younger kids.

Being there is a living hell for parents who are agoraphobic.

I suffer through it for my kids but I goddamn HATE large crowds and lots of noise. And Disney is one of the busiest attractions in the world, meaning plenty of both.

Too poor to afford the trip. Borderline child abuse (hyperbole) to deprive your child of Disney World.

Orange Beach. Stay at one of the Phoenix complexes. One with a lazy river.

And here I always thought people went to Disney because they were too poor to afford a good vacation

Guess it’s all a matter of perspective
