Anyone here have experience or recommendations for places to stay in upper peninsula Michigan? Our family of four (kids are 9 and 4) will be up that way at end of June and hoping to spend a few days there. Preferably a cabin or resort with lake access.

Depends where you'll be going. Ain't much in the UP Baw! Pretty remote.

But, it is spectacular scenery. We camped near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore! Later stayed in Munising for a couple of days. You could look at VRBO in Munising. Lots of choices. I didn't stay there but remember the Roam Inn. Not sure if that'd work with kids though.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park is a must see.

Just two cautions. Distances are long. Don't think you can easily do sites like Sault Ste. Marie, Tahquamenon Falls and the Pictured Rocks all in one day. The other is cell phone service. If your phone doesn't use either the Verizon or AT&T networks, you won't have much connectivity.

Another thought. There was a recent thread on Traverse City. Not the "UP" but you could drive up there from there if you're willing to drive a couple of hours. Much more "kid friendly" with things to do. Maybe look into the Homestead? It's a beautiful mid to upscale resort on the lake in the middle of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. There are huge stretches of sandy beaches that you can have all to yourself in the vicinity. 45 minutes from Traverse City.

Petosky is another really nice town on Lake Michigan. Check out the Inn At Bay Harbor!

So this is an area I have longed to see via pulling a travel trailer and getting out of the hot south in July-Aug. Is that possible to do with a travel trailer and is the fishing good in July-Aug there.

Yes. And yes! Tahquamenon Falls State Park had a nice campground. We just visited for the day and didn't camp FYI.

We tent camp. But did find this site: "Best Campgrounds"!

That would be a great idea! We went for the day. Some older inns and VRBOs on the island. Really enjoyed it.

I grew up in northern Michigan and went to college in the UP.

I love the UP. If you are nature lovers it is hard to beat. But the touristy towns are not as close together as the Traverse City or Alpena areas.

I would recommend starting in the Soo and heading west.

Lookout near Monocle Lake and coffee shop near Brimley.

Go to Tahquamenon Falls and then Gran Marias. Was a brewery there. The lake shore on Superior is gorgeous and you can easily find a spot that will be likely the only family there. Deer park area has camping.

Pictured rocks next. Marquette is a cool college town.

Porcupine Mtns west of there if you have the time and want to hike.

Can highly recommend the Pictured Rocks excursion. I think it might be the most obscure/underrated such thing in the country. When we went, the boat was like 90% Indian Americans actually out seeing the country.

Arguably worth ducking across the border into Sault St. Marie. It's known for being the place in Canada that Italians emigrated to - so you can actually get a decent Italian meal there. Bizarre.

In general, I was surprised at how "not fancy" the housing stock in the UP was. I thought it would be super nice vacation homes and stuff. But...it's not. It's kind of ghetto.

I'd add the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum on the Lake near Paradise, MI. Really fascinating. The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald lies at the bottom of the southeastern portion of Lake Superior in 530 feet of water. You can see all about the history of this famous wreck, but there are hundreds of others in that Lake. Many don't know how dangerous it can be.

Horse flies. They're a little easier to kill though than the regular house fly.

If you drive through green Bay to get to UP, be sure and tour Lambeau field. I did a few years ago. Really enjoyed it and their hall of fame museum.

Had a neighbor in Indianapolis who has a summer home in White Hall, MI. He gave us the keys for a week in 2021, and we drove up there and it is beautiful. We took day trips to Ludington, and Grand Haven, and stopped in St Joes and New Buffalo on the way back. There are a lot of really neat little towns on Lake Michigan, and the feel is very old school. Lots of areas with cordoned off swimming areas, old fashioned hot dot/ice cream stands, etc. You can picture in your mind what it all looked like 50-70 years ago.

I saw the greatest billboard of all time in the UP. It was an insurance company, and it said:

We've got the UP covered for all THREE seasons: snow, mosquitoes and snow.
