Supposed to be flying to Oregon with wife and 4mth old first thing Thursday morning. With this tropical storm or possible small hurricane predicted to be on top of us wed/thursday, what can I expect from Southwest? And is there something I should be doing proactively right now.

I'm about to start a thread. So far no waivers out yet, but i would absolutely expect some if this forecast holds and it picks up.

All you can do at this point is wait until they post the waiver and then immediately change flights or cancel. What do you want to do with this trip- still go albeit delayed, leave early (Tuesday?), or cancel? Plan your backups now and if you can leave early, then plan what flights you want to get on out of MSY on tuesday. If you can't leave early, then everything should be functioning by friday pending how bad the storm is and where it hits.

Here is the prediction from NOLA’s Bob Breck:

Bob Breck

‘RIGHT NOW, it appears we're in for another soaking here with 4-6+" likely and 6-10+" possible. Arrival time for the heaviest rains will be Wednesday into Thursday. Confidence in this initial forecast is LOW since 1) we don't have a defined surface locations and 2) the upper trough has lifted out leaving weak steering over the northern Gulf.”

The problem I have with the forecast is the winds. Right now, i see 25mph sustained winds (not even gust speeds) for wednesday afternoon and evening. That's going to cause issues with MSY. Even thursday morning it's 18mph sustained

Can’t leave early, so it’s either Thursday or Friday. Where do they post the waivers? Will they send me emails with updated information?

Depends on the airline, but you can just google "Airline Name weather"

LINK

That is for AA. Still no waiver. You will likely see an interruption to travel Wednesday evening with lingering effects into Thursday.

Meaning - it is possible your early morning flight is canceled because the inbound can't come Wednesday.

Thursday morning will be fine for regular operations.

Best case is late morning Thursday flights out of MSY, assuming no major flooding and/or power outages. I'm sure they will stage some flight crews in the City and will have planes available, but after a big storm they usually need to have flights coming in to get flights out.

If you really mean “first thing,” that means your aircraft will have to fly in the night before. That may not happen (they don’t want to get an aircraft stuck at an airport in a storm if possible) which probably represents your biggest risk.

If you happen to be on the flight that goes to Chicago for a connection, I would change it to the routes that connect in Dallas or Denver. I’m guessing flying north along the storm track would cause an MSY-MDW flight to tack northwest until it can get ahead of the storm, which might cause a delay.

They just closed MSY. So your plane will almost certainly not be there tomorrow morning.
