Wife and I are planning a trip in Dec just the two of us. Were originally going to do Disney as that’s where we honeymooned, but with all the bullshite I dont want to go back.

We’re going to Mexico next spring, and Dec is probably too early for skiing. Any ideas? I don’t want to be on the go the entire time and would like someplace with nice accommodations. I’m just drawing a blank right now.

Bend, Or. You'd definitely be able to ski in December here.

Tip of the hat to you on Disney, I am in the same boat. We were planning a surprise spring break trip in ‘23 for one of the kids birthday and that’s off now.

Our anniversary is in Dec. and with all the hecticness around Christmas and limited time older parents can keep the kids we’ve never been able to get away for more than a couple of nights, so we’ve never ventured far but have had some good trips themed around Christmas (if y’all are into that). Bigger cities with more offerings compared to where we are like Nashville/Atlanta even Memphis. Hit a couple of good restaurants, lights and displays, and find a Christmas themed performance like the symphony, ballet, or Grand Ole Opry performance at the Ryman.

Due to the limited time with access to flights and flight cancellation risk it’s always been within driving distance. May not be your kind of thing but just throwing out another angle that might get overlooked sometime.

I second the Utah suggestion. Even if you don't want to hike there is plenty to see in the 5 parks.

Moab Utah - easy access to Arches NP. Stay at the Sorrel River Ranch.

Santa Fe, NM - There is a lot to explore in santa fe as well as nearby Taos, NM.

I'm not sure this is the best advice for a December trip. I love southern Utah (and Moab), but I went in mid-October 2020 and it was very cold at night (low 30's). During the day was nice but you could feel the weather changing.

A simple Google search shows average day time temperatures in mid-December are at 40 degrees. Not ideal for hiking and traversing a park. Average night time temps are 21 degrees

My advice is go to the parks in Utah in the spring or fall (March/April/May or Sept/Oct), but not in December.

Haven't been, but pre-kids we were looking into the Sonoma & Napa valley tours. We were going to fly into SF and stay there for a few days (catch a baseball game), do the tours, then end in Yosemite for a few days. Hadn't figured out where we were going to fly out before we nixed it and did the Chicago -> Cedar Point -> Windsor (see NYY v Det baseball game) -> Niagara -> Pitt (to fly out).

In before the Hedonism recommendations!

December? If you don' mind cold weather, consider a trip to Europe. Prague in particular, but certainly many other potential locations in Germany or Austria. The Christmas Markets that time of year are magical.

I like the suggestion of somewhere in Europe with Christmas markets.

I've been to NYC a few times in December and it's also a nice atmosphere there.

There is just something awesome about touring historic cities in the cold, ducking into cozy old bars to warm up, etc. Not to mention high end hotels are cheaper (if not peak Christmas) and in my experience wintertime tourists are less obnoxious and more agreeable than Summer hordes.

Amen to that! Amazing time. Between the food vendors, stopping for hot drinks (Gluehwein, Grog, Jagertee), certainly something everyone would want to experience if they can. If I was looking for a romantic place to go with the Mrs., it'd be that or if I had the coin, Petit St. Vincent if I was looking for and island trip in the Carribbean.

Yes but I was really thinking staying stateside. Moab sounds interesting. Is Nashville a good Dec trip? Maybe a Tennessee run? I’ll admit I haven’t been to Gatlinburg area since I was a kid, so I don’t know if the Smokies would be stupid for us now.

I did NYC in Dec in 2019 right before Covid. I’m good. I don’t really want to go anywhere near there right now.

Been several years since I’ve been to Gatlinburg but when we went a couple of weeks prior to Christmas back then we arrived on a Sunday it was like a ghost town during that week and enjoyable. Obviously at lot could have changed since then. Nashville around that same time on the weekend a few years back was enjoyable too. Like I said earlier we enjoy the Christmas season and there was plenty of that around. Went to the Opry one night and Amy Grant and Vince Gill also do a series of Christmas shows at the Ryman during Dec. if you are into that type of music. I’d say Nashville is good for a weekend then transition to Gatlinburg after the weekend crowd has moved out. I will caveat it takes a lot less to entertain me than most, especially around that time of year so I’m sure you’ll get some different opinions on those locations.

Quebec City. Great skiing, European feel, and hell of a German Christmas Market. Stay at Château Frontenac. My wife and I went there for thanksgiving and it was amazing.

I like big cities just before Christmas, especially those up north where it's a little colder. I lived in Chicago for years and that would be a good starting point, or New York.

There is usually a Christmas market. Also many restaurants and hotels have some sort of elaborate Christmas decorations.

If a big city isn't your jam, 30A or Charleston, or perhaps somewhere in the Smokies.

Or maybe post up at Pursell Farms and play golf and shoot guns for a few days. Their course is stunning. You're about 45 minutes from Homewood-Mountain Brook and the restaurants there.
