We are flying with my almost 2 year old from Atlanta to Portland this weekend (5 hour flight). We went ahead and bought him his seat, and are going to bring his car seat onto the plane to keep him contained and in something he’s comfortable in. We are all on same row and I picked seats towards back of plane. We are checking his actual stroller to final destination, and bringing him through airport in his car seat on a car seat dolly that Britax has, that can fold up and go in overhead bin. We are just trying to make this as seamless as possible and want the flight to not be miserable for all passengers. Any other advice?

Lots of snacks, tablet time without strict rules.

if the car seat clicks into the stroller, you can bring it and gate check it.

small tackle box with various snacks
sticker books - one of those reusable stickers
drawing pad
headphones and tablet
any little cars/trains type of toys
let him walk up the aisle and explore a little mid flight

Good luck!

I second the snacks and iPad/electronics suggestion above. Also, buy some small toys that he’s never played with before and give them to him one after another as needed to keep him occupied. If he won’t settle down or is very upset during the flight, you could give him some children’s Benadryl as a last resort to help him sleep.

Gum, or something to keep him chewing/swallowing (100% buy before you hit the airport.) The number one reason a normal child will cry on a plane is because they don't know how to equalize their ear pressure.

Thank yall! Will update! He’s done fine on two previous flights in our lap on shorter legs, but he’s much more mobile now so that’s what is making this interesting. The new toy idea is interesting for sure

Did not go well at all today lol. We woke up at 3:15 am CST, and he did not nap one bit and did not want to be contained. We will go back to drawing board for flight back home

Tons of exercise. Gotta wear the kid out. May consider keeping them up late or otherwise off their schedule so they would be extra tired for the flight.

Allow him to run in the airport.

Long flights like that just aren't easy, they just aren't easy to change up the schedule.

But honestly, it is what it is. Best of luck to you.

We just flew with our 16 month old to Sweden. She did great for the most part. Buying a seat and bringing to car seat in hopes of a nap is the way to go.

Honestly, there are no rules on a long flight with a toddler. Everything is out the window. Screen time etc.

We got a bulkhead row and it was a life saver as she sat and played in the open front area when she could. Made a huge difference.
