If you have AT&T just call them and they will add unlimited talk and text in Mexico for free. They also give you 1 gig of data per month in Mexico.

You don't even have to call. It's a box you click in your account settings online.

For your cell phone call your provider and add international calling for about $5/month. Only use your phone if you have to bc it is still abou $0.50/minute.

Don't text because it starts to add up quick with international texting

TURN OFF DATA ROAMING or you will get raped on data charges

No and no. If he has AT&T the above is terrible advice. If he has Verizon he should check with them as I'd be surprised if they don't have a similar option.

All inclusive = shitty food. Bring cash so you can eat well.

I'd bring about $250 in small bills

Also make sure you have a credit card that waives foreign transaction fees

Bring lots of small bills 1-5-10s for tips and some cash for shopping. I'd say $50 a day in tips plus some money if you plan to shop.

Yes! Bring cash and tip well. I stayed all inclusive at Cancun Palace resorts, tipped big, and pretty much had folks asking to bring me stuff the whole time. Also, take the bus at night when traveling between bars. It's usually an interesting experience.

So if we are on airplane mode using wifi and we text or FaceTime someone will it use our data?

No, that's exactly what we did when we went on our honeymoon. The wifi even carried down to the beach

Just came back from Cozumel for the first time, this thread would have come in handy

-Bring Sunscreen and Aloe
-Bring a couple hundred in 1's to tip for pool/beach side service, not needed at restaurants
-Turn phone data off, so it only uses wifi for data or just turn onto airplane mode
-Watch out for the timeshare people at airport and basically everywhere in Mexico
-Mexico airport didn't play around with the quart bag and liquids(I haven't done that in my last 20 flights in the US, the quart bag part) I had to find someone who had an extra one or they were gonna make me throw my shite away.

I was shocked, the wifi power and coverage was worlds better than any US hotel I've been too.

Are you going to Moon Palace?

We did Sandal's a few weeks ago. If you aren't doing excursions. $200 should be plenty.

If Verizon is your carrier, it's a $2.00/day up charge for service in Mexico.

Happy Honeymooning.

I don't understand most of the advice in this thread. If you're staying at a good all inclusive, gratuity is included and you really don't need any cash for tips.

I agree. I've stayed at two all inclusive and they wouldn't even take my tip. Whomever said 50 dollars a day in tips is crazy. We took about 300 dollars in cash for the whole week and had plenty left over

I figure on $100 a day including tips. If you're there for a week, bring $200 in one dollar bills and another $500.
You might want to do one day trip somewhere just to break up the monotony. There's also meals at the airport, souvenirs, etc.

Convert some dollars to pesos. The locals will try to screw you on exchange rate.

This not true, you must of stayed at a cheap resort. I stayed at The Royal in Playa Del Carmen and the food was excellent and the alcohol was top tier. I also have been to the Riu Palace in Aruba and the food was excellent there as well but not as good as the Royal. It just depends on if you pick a 3 star or a 5 star hotel, you get what you pay for.

My 2 rules for visiting Mexico.

1. Bring cash for tipping & unexpected situations.
2. Trust nobody

We stayed at Secrets Aura in Cozumel, the reviews raved about food, it was good, but not wow by any stretch. We talked to some people that have stayed all over Mexico and the Caribbean, they said there is definitely a cieling to the quality of resort food no matter how expensive the place is and that our place was about as good as it got. I blame this on Midwesterners used to bland food pumping up food reviews.
