Thread can be about men or women.

Sling bags are an increasing choice for European travel. They offer convenience, security, and style. Alternative to the traditional day pack. Or in men's cases in Europe, "The Man Purse"!

Anyone using them? Thoughts?

They certainly offer a style. A shitty one.

Not mine either. If we carry anything, it'd usually be the collapsable backpack we bring with us.

Something like this one.

But..with a European trip coming up, and us taking my son and his wife, was wondering if that was something women would want. Certainly, see them around more often these days.

I think if women want to feel stylish they bring along their purse or handbag. And if they don't want to be burdened with a personal item then they just put their crap in their man's day pack and reach in whenever they need something.

Not that I would ever wear a man purse or a fanny pack on a sling, but a must-have for me is a side pocket for a water bottle. When I'm on the go I need access to a beverage.

The Patagonia 8L Atom Sling is my murse of choice.

Can hold three (very) light jackets/rain jackets, a phone brick and phones, and has a "money pouch" on the sling.

Nope

The wife has a small travel purse/bag that works perfectly.

I'm trying to work my way down from a backpack.

Last trip I didn't have one on the whole time. It was pretty great. I bought pretty small cell chargers I could carry and that was it.

Liberating.

So! Tell us more.

Walking around all day. Need that water. Place to store snacks or gifts. That windbreaker. If you didn't use a backpack (granted maybe they're the smaller collapsable kind even?), what did you use for all that? Traveling alone ?(part of the issue is schlepping all the little tchotchke type stuff the wife wants to get and I'm the pack horse! )

Not something I would want. I'd rather bring a small crossbody or wristlet that could be carried out to dinner and a backpack similar to the one you posted. The one I use is Zomake off Amazon, but it's virtually the same pack with a different brand. They are so convenient for excursions.

So basically a backpack with only one should strap? What's the point?

This was in Japan so I could buy that stuff just like I would if I was in the US. I wasn't out hiking or anything.

Same with shopping. Used the shopping bags they gave us.

Dressed for the weather, etc.

Only thing you can't bring is a big camera but I've stopped using mine anyway because the one I have is so obtrusive. Outside of a safari or something.

My wife used one of those small Lululemon knockoff shoulder strap things for her needs. The ones that are about the size of a business class amenity kit.

I purchase one somewhat similar to this one

HOXSURY Anti Theft Travel Bag,Waterproof Sling Chest Bag, Crossbody Multi Pockets Shoulder Bag for Men Women

It works great! The two zipper pockets across the front were especially useful. I dedicated one to passport, cc and an additional i.d. So i always knew where they were. The other was used for cash which fit perfectly unfolded. I arranged by denomination and could easily slip out a tip or $ for a small purchase.

Rear zipper compartment for phone, itinerary, sunglasses, comb. I kept it simple to keep the bag pretty flat, not trying to use it like a tote bag! Fit into my personal item if airport insisted on counting it.

By getting it in a neutral color (i have also seen camo, lol) and keeping it very flat, i think a man could find it useful (and not too eeeuuuuwwwww, man bag) especially in airports or border crossings. If it bothers you, put it in your backpack or duffel later and redistribute the contents …but they honestly are extremely useful short term. A woman could easily use in markets at destination for shopping (to carry money, not big enough for carrying purchases) , a man may prefer to use only on travel transfer days.

Mine was very very useful on a recent 3 1/2 week African safari into 4 different countries (lots of borders , lots of planes) Safari clothes were advised green and khaki, so mine was ugly khaki. I liked it so much that i bought another in a nicer color and use it daily in US. If a man can get over the mental hurdle, he would 100% find it useful in specific travel instances. I’m not saying go bar hopping with it, just use it as a "keep travel documents/$$ accessible and safe in front of you" short term solution. Don’t overpack or get a bulky one.
