Couldn't disagree more.
Pay the annual fee once then drop it before it hits the second time, enjoy those benefits for a year then get another card and enjoy their promo offer, enjoy those benefits for a year then drop that one...so on and so on.

I’m not opening a new credit card once a year.

is it any hotel charge or only certain hotels they partner with?
I don't know. We received our hotel credit in San Diego at The Guild hotel, not sure if there is partnership.

If I were closer to and used IAH or ATL more I would lean more Delta.
IAH is a major United hub. You get the same routes on Delta from there as you would from MSY

Any reason why not? The credit hit is negligible from my experience

The way to go is to open a new card once a month and rack up the signup bonuses.

Sarcasm? Because it isn’t possible. Way too many inquiries and Chase has that 5/24 rule and Citi has something similar. Amex is even worse.

I have Sappire Reserve. We spend about 70k per year on it. We have gotten about $4500-$5000 per year covered toward our vacations. The lounge access includes $28pp in restaurants in many airports including IAH and DCA which I fly through often.

That's why one should start with Chase. But small business credit cards don't show up on a personal credit report, so you can get a bunch of them and stay under 5/24 for a while.

In theory, you can only get a particular Amex card once every seven years. In reality, there are usually "no lifetime language" links available to apply.
A card a month isn't sustainable indefinitely, but you can do it for a while. I think I had 34 card signups in my first 3 years in the game, but I know a guy who did 50 in two years.

The credit hit is very negligible (usually less than 10 points) and bounces right back within a matter of months. The promos each year are more than worth it.

As a matter of fact, the very tiny credit goes away and then makes your score go up. FICO actually rewards you and boosts your score for up to 21 accounts.

Therefore you aren’t building any sustainable rewards. Just quick bonus that more than likely will be used that year. Conversely, I’m now titanium with Marriott this year but platinum for life. No matter what I do, I’m automatically Platinum which affords a great deal of benefits.
I prefer to stay with brand loyalty to accumulate big rewards instead of jumping from one to another for a quick bonus.
Plus I don’t want to deal with all the crap every year of opening and closing accounts. I have so many things linked to auto bill pay and online accounts that it would be a nightmare to have to change that once a year, every year on my phone and other devices.

Plat is a terrible everyday spending card. The 5x points on flights are great and the 5x on hotels booked through Amex is ok, but I'd rather get the rewards through Marriott by booking directly. The benefits of the Plat are great however (lounge access, travel credit, rental car statuses, etc.)
The Gold offers 4x points on dining and supermarkets which is where the bulk of our daily spending comes from. Couple that with a $250 annual fee (which also includes an Uber credit and other things) make that card a no brainer.
I'm also considering picking up the Amex Green as it has 3x points on hotels, rental cars and flights (though I would use Plat for flights) and only a $150 annual fee.

Amex is the best. Between my wife and I we racked up almost 1 million points in sign-up bonuses within a year.
Chase is the worst.

Not true.

Valid reason but you are missing out.

There's a difference between not wanting to bother with it yourself and then recommending the same strategy to others.
From a point accumulation perspective, which is what the OP is asking about, you can do better by accumulating and rotating through different cards.

True. But the OP hasn’t given us a lot of info. Just asking for the best travel card. Not the best way to take advantage of the system.
We don’t know much info and I’m making an assumption that he doesn’t want to go to deep into this. No info on travel habits, location, spend habits, family, etc. All of which matters for a travel card. I guessing he just wants a card with good perks and not looking to switch cards every year or every month like someone suggested.
I could be wrong, but to me it’s like if someone asks for help on tickets for their first LSU game and suggesting to purchase season tickets in the club and sell every game except the one you want to attend and should be able to go for free. Uhhh, no thanks
