We do. Just reluctantly canceled a trip to Santa Fe. Better safe than sorry.

Went to Mexico City - Condessa area. Felt really safe and we were close to all of the great Museums and cultural/ historical sites. Vibrant city that tops New York in the cultural area. Like NY, there is crime, but you you have to know where to stay.

I went to Cancun and felt safer than waking down Bourbon. The cartels don’t frick with tourists. What happened is isolated and the people responsible probably are taking dirt naps because you don’t frick with tourist dollars.
NOPD used to understand this too.

Mexico is dangerous. The murder rate is 4x higher than the US. I stopped going to New Orleans and Chicago because I don’t want to be shot. Why the hell would I go to Mexico where it is worse. Also, there are recent examples of tourists being killed in gun battles between cartels in the middle of the day in Cancun. Kidnappings are frequent events in northern and interior Mexico if they think you have money. Don’t fool yourself just because the locals you met are nice. I’m sure most of the people in Afghanistan are nice but I’m not going there either.

That's smart -- just like avoiding the beach so that you don't get eaten by sharks.
That's why I never go anywhere in a car. Everyday on the news, I see a report that someone died in a car wreck. I mean, car wrecks kill thousands of Americans each year. Also, I don't go outside, because I could get struck by lightning. And I don't stay inside, because I could die of carbon monoxide poisoning.

As for Mexico, I would suggest that the events recently have made it a tad safer as it relates to the cartels.
My grand dad booked travel on any airline / cruise ship / resort that recently had an issue. He believed that the increased scrutiny lead to safer outcomes. He never had any issues…ever. He was a smart man.

This is not accurate, especially since this thread is about Mexico. I live in Houston and it’s far cheaper for us to go to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel than it is anywhere in Florida, and certainly California.
This includes flight, hotel, and food + beverage.

If there was a make of car that killed 4x more people than other cars, I would avoid that car. You enjoy that Pinto though.

You're right. By the way, I can't believe that all those idiots vacation in Florida. There are beaches in Washington State, and those have such a lower risk of lightning deaths. Florida is more than 4X as deadly.

I’ve been to Isla Mujeres a few times. Also just got back from Cabo last month. Stayed at an Airbnb inside a larger resort community and it was awesome. We had a rental car and went all around town, never felt unsafe.
I also lived in NOLA where I learned to keep my head on a swivel. Used that skill in Mexico and it worked.

I get beachfront condo in Mexico every summer.
Nice place newer building 2 bed / 2 bath.
The rate is $200/night.
Cheaper than anything in Florida for sure.

The situation that recently happened was from people performing a half arse surgery that some dipshits were suckered for. Ignore it.
Resorts are basically protected and run by cartel for the sake of bringing money in. They actually keep petty criminals who aren't in organizations in check. I've read similar stories, but this is one I recall hearing about from a few weeks ago:
Foreign travelers walked into an area just outside of the resort they were staying in. While walking, they were robbed at gunpoint. Gave up their wallets, the criminals ran away. They reported it to the hotel and police. Less than 24 hours, their belongings just so happened to appear at the front desk. Police weren't the ones that turned it in. It was cartel.
They want people to keep coming because it keeps money flowing through the cities and allows them to continue running operations similar to those protective services you see mafia use. Don't be mistaken though, they just want you to keep coming back to spend money.
There is nothing to fear about going to Mexico. You're there to have a good time. Don't let one off instances ruin it.
