Tent camping recommendations- 3-5 hour drive from northshore

Want something hilly with hiking. Fishing would be a plus. Would also love if we could be on the edge of woods or beneath a canopy. Not interested in a treeless landscape; want it to feel primitive.

Probably more at the 4-hour mark, but just north of Tuscaloosa is where the hills start that are closest to you. Lake Lurleen is a good spot.

Oak Mountain by Birmingham is a nice option, never camped there but have hiked and biked

Might get a little cooler further north in AL but you’re looking at 7+ hours. The beach is about the only place I can think of 5 hrs from Nee Orleans where I’d was to sleep outside in August. And even that doesn’t sound fun to me.

Oh. Well then Oak Mtn isn’t a terrible option then. I would not describe Lake Lurleen as hilly or a good place for a hike.

This may fit the bill once it gets colder if you want a quick tent camping weekend. We did it for many years with a big group when the kids were young around Easter and Thanksgiving, Hiking, streams, canopy of big trees and history. Port Gipson is cool too.

Desoto State park is not far from Lookout Mountain (Mentone, Al). 6 hour drive from Slidell. About as mild temperature wise as you will find in August unless you go further north.

It’s 2 hours to Rocky Springs and 6,5 hours to Hot Springs from Baton Rouge. At Rocky Spring you can be roasting marshmallows before your half way to Arkansas. You really need more than a weekend to camp in Arkansas to enjoy it enough,

Kisatchie National Forest - dispersed camping or designated campgrounds; wild azalea trail, caroline dorman trail, etc for hiking, or just bushwack through the NF. The Ranger District has the most hills (I believe).

The Longleaf Vista Nature Trail is short and easy, but I love it. The Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway at dawn or dusk is one of the most underrated drives in the state.

Clear Springs Campground in the Homochitto National Forest has some pretty nice sites. It is best when the temps are mild. It can get pretty busy during hunting season fyi

Chicot State Park is one of the most beautiful in the state. Highly recommend
