Just keep an eye on the temps. I once went in mid-august and it was miserable. Made it through one night, went fishing next day, made it to 9pm second night, realized it was never going to cool off and went home. Had a great time with the dog on the river but sleeping in 95 degree tent is not so great.
Would kill to do it again in October or April.

If you’re willing to stretch the drive to 6 hours you can make it to Cheaha State Park within the Talladega National Forest. It is the highest point in Alabama.
