What month was that in your pictures?
The last day of May. Still had a bunch of snow on the higher trails and a good bit of them were closed at the time.

Ive been twice. Once as part of a traditional vacation and the other was hiking the Tour de Mont Blanc.
Flew into Zurich (I spent zero time there). Went directly to Lucerne for a day or two and then to Lauterbrunnen. Lauterbrunner or Interlaken are absolute must-dos if you want to experience the alps. Just google a few pics of Lauterbrunnen.
As far as the backpacking, it took me through smaller towns which was another incredible experience. There was one town that was very memorable (I'll go find the name of it when the sun comes up). If you're near there, definitely worth a visit.
We eventually left out of Geneva. It was cool but its not an "alp" experience.

We're flying into Frankfurt (then taking the train to Freiburg, Germany) and flying out of Zurich in September.

We did not. I don't think it was open when we were there.

Dang. I have it as a saved place in Google maps so I was curious.

I’ve done some alpine slides before and they are a blast.
Underated activity is taking the ski lifts up to the top. Most of the time you do that and then take the alpine slide down.
Also can’t recommend some of the other more extreme mountain activities like canyoning and mountaineering.

I love alpine slides. I saw there is one near Grindewald that looked cool. Somewhere they have mountain carts too that you can drive down which looks fun. Like a newer version of the big wheel.

Just got back from Switzerland 2 weeks ago. Driving is very easy, just need to make sure you get a vignette if driving from another country (we did Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland).
Lucerne, Bern, and Geneva were all incredible cities. Really enjoyed walking around those and just getting lost for a day. Also most hotels now give you a tourist pass which gives you free use of the public transit systems. Take advantage of that!
Went to Grindelwald, Interlakken, and Kandersteg for the hikes and views. None of those disappointed either. Took the lifts to get to the top and back down. Jungfraujoch was an awesome time, but it is pricey.
I will be going back in summer months because the hikes we did were all snow. It's still beautiful, but it's clear to see how awesome those lake towns have to be in the summer.
Find a good bench on the lake, sit down, and soak it all in with air so crisp it almost hurts to breath.

I’ve been able to find hotels or air bnb rooms that are very affordable (under $200 a night) in almost every town. I understand restaurants are expensive though. We will probably pickup groceries for lunch each day as we will be hiking a lot. Aside from meals, are the gift shops expensive too? How much is a T-shirt?

We are actually considering staying in grindewald for our trip. It’s between that and Lauterbrunnen. Both look great. Seems like a little more to do activity wise in grindewald and more places to eat and look around within walking distance. Im out on staying in any of those car free villages though like wengen and murren. I wanna be able to hop in my rental and go for an evening drive if I want to just to look around.

I feel the same way. We will probably stay in Zermatt for a night though and just leave our car and luggage in Tasch for the day/night.
I think we will stay in Grindewald and Lauterbrunnen. I found some decent airbnb rates in each with great views. I’d just rather have a car than rely on trains and a set schedule. Plus my wife isn’t gonna pack light enough to make carrying luggage around trains easy.
Let me know what rental car company you use and your thoughts. I found one for $500 for a week and another was $1000 for the same car. Geneva looks to be a little cheaper than Zurich too.

Take a look at flying in/out of Bern as well. Comparable prices on dates I’ve looked at and rental cars were a tad cheaper when I looked.

I’m still a ways out. I’d rather pay extra to have a shorter travel day and Geneva seems to have what I want out of Atlanta over others. I’m curious how bad the jet lag will be that first day flying overnight.

Going over, its always a lot better to have a direct from the states then a connection in Europe IMO. You get there usually earlier in the day and don't have to go through the process of a layover and 2nd flight jet lagged.
I think you'll enjoy having a car. The driving is very easy and they generally obey the rules of the road extremely well. Its very nice in the mountains to have a car as most places you can drive from point A to B directly.

Yeah the more I look the more I’m excited to drive. I love driving in Colorado and being able to park to see mountains whereas a train would just keep going. I’ve heard some trains have views cars don’t get but cars also get views that trains don’t too.
Are the trains you drive on common? I’ve heard that freaks people out when google maps turns people onto a train. Zermatt is the only place we will stay thet I can’t drive in I think but I’m ok leaving it for a day.

Lauterbrunnen Valley is less touristy and more scenic, IMO. Grindelwald is has awesome views of the Eiger but gets all the bus tour crowds.
You can take short train rides up to Murren and Wengen from Lauterbrunnen as well. Along with some of the views around Zermatt we found the hiking around Murren to be the most quintessential Alpine experience on our trip.
If you’re spending time around Interlaken take the ferry around Lake Brienz. Iseltwald is badass and you can walk/ferry to Grandhotel Giessbach where Band of Brothers was filmed.

Are there many restaurants or hotels in Lauterbrunnen?

Airbnb has some solid options. If I stay there I want a balcony with a view of the big waterfall.

Same. I found an awesome airbnb in Grindewald for cheap. Haven’t checked Lauterbrunnen yet.
