In case you didn’t see the news, there was a multinational power outage yesterday affecting all of Spain, Portugal and Southern France. Power was out from 13+ hours. Supposed to fly home from my Madrid today, but my flights are cancelled. Trying to rebook flight home, but I am currently stuck in Spain. What a nightmare.

I've got about an hr and a half this morning to try and help if you need anything such as access to the internet. Have you heard of anything regarding when the power is supposed to come back on?

If it's not going to be for a few more days, there's no point in constantly rebooking yourself for the next days flight and the following day

Thanks Cuse. Power came back on last night. Got rebooked for tomorrow, but got downgraded from first class to coach. At this point I’m just happy to have a flight home, although not looking forward to 10 hour transatlantic flight in a middle seat in coach.

People are going to cancel or not make it to the airport that morning, just keep an eye on the seats throughout the day like a hawk and you should get some better ones

Make sure you get compensation. Because you're flying from an EU country, the carrier (assuming AA or DL) is likely going to fight you a lot less. At a bare minimum, the difference in fare (hopefully an upgrade certificate or a chunk of miles for next time as well). I'd be careful about pushing them too far for lodging, etc., because they'll just claim force majeure.

Ooh that's a good point too, downgrade compensation is a thing flying back from Europe. What is the spec, EU ##?

EU Air Passenger Rights

At the end of this section, there's a helpful button labeled, "Claim your rights!" (I would try for 100% of the downgrade cost with the carrier before trying for 75% through the EU first)
quote:

If you are downgraded, you are entitled to reimbursement of a percentage of the price of your ticket, depending on the flight distance as follows:

a) 30% - flights of 1 500 km or less

b) 50% - flights within the EU of more than 1 500 km (except flights between the EU and French overseas departments), and all other flights between 1 500 and 3 500 km

c) 75% - flights not falling under (a) or (b), including flights between the EU and French overseas departments.

If you have 2 or more connecting flights included in a single ticket, you can only be reimbursed for the flight which was downgraded and not for the entire journey. The reimbursement should be paid within 7 days.

Thanks for info. They told me to call once I get home about refunding difference in price for downgrade, but bc cancellation not their fault, they can’t compensate for extra day of hotel or other costs. Also got moved from 2 middle seats in very back of plane to aisle and middle seat in first row of coach. It’s not first class, but better than what I had.

Take the train as north as you have to in order to fly home. Amsterdam?

FYI my understanding was the trains weren't working either while the electricity was out.

They did this to me last year on a Delta flight. They seem to have a template for this. They didn't do squat the first couple of calls and then said they would "investigate". I continued to call back and bug them on a regular schedule and they finally gave me some miles. It seemed to me they were trying to wear me down (which they did) or really hoping I would give up and go away.

It took me a single call to United after a flight to Brussels ended up with me buying a suit before my luggage showed up. I was credited with the $700 or so before my credit card statement hit.

You got screwed if the flight was into or from the EU (these rules went into place about ten years ago IIRC).
