St Louis - Where to Stay?

Weekend trip and looking to go the Airbnb route. Will be headed to a Cardinals game or two and the Arch. Looking for something less expensive than the going rates on hotel/rentals right by the stadium and will have kids with us, so want to be sure we are in a good safe area. Thanks.

Not Airbnb but the Union Station Hotel is usually pretty reasonable. Do a pretty cool light show in the lobby every hour. Aquarium and new Ferris wheel right there beside it also. Good for kids.

Stay in Clayton. Downtown is not always the best scene. It's fun during a Cards game but after they go home... Broadway Oyster Bar is a great place to pregame and enjoy some music.
I know some folks still like downtown, and I stay there when it's convenient, but Clayton actually has a vibrant downtown (it's like the second downtown St. Louis) all days.

Clayton. Forest Park is great and the Zoo is free and would be good with the kids. Can Uber in for the game and to the Arch no problem. No real other reason to stay in downtown St Louis.
The City Museum is kid heaven too

Forest park area has a ton hotels.
Good areas would be Soulard, Forest Park, Shaw, Central West End, Northampton/ Southampton, the Hill.
Avoid anything north of the street called Washington Ave and the neighborhood called Dutchtown and you'll be perfectly fine.
Clayton is a ritzy downtown, and very safe. Has a train stop that will take you downtown and drop you off at busch stadium.

Not downtown.
We stayed there at the Hilton St. Louis Downtown at the Arch for one night during Christmas break last year. So many aggressive panhandlers/homeless/vagrants on the street that the hotel lobby is not even "open", you either have to use your room key card to get in or they have to buzz you to get in.

Hampton Inn Forrest Park is where I stay for work. Easy access to the Park, Clayton, The Hill, downtown etc.
Usually not too expensive. But as people said Clayton or the Forrest Park area are where you want to be.

Everyone is beating around the bush and saying Forest park area. What they mean is spend the money and stay at Chase Park Plaza.

I had to double take that I hadn't already posted on here because I was going to say the same thing. I dig Clayton... parked the car and never walked more than a few blocks and could eat/drink at numerous spots.

Went last year. Stayed at the Missouri athletic club which is on Washington didn’t have any issues. Went to one game. I’d recommend just hanging at ballpark village outside for a game. Also there is a Hilton hotel that has a rooftop bar/rest that you can see into the stadium during a game. It gets packed of course but is an awesome experience to witness a game or a few innings. So outside of attending a game I’d take in some of the games at the ballpark village and the rooftop 360 at the Hilton as well. Several breweries around the city. They have scooters so that was my form of transportation the weekend I was there almost a year ago from today. Just like any big city it has its homeless people and shady characters. Be smart. Use common sense and you’ll be fine. Outside of informing you it’s impossible not to spill a drink while on the scooter the rest is cake.
