I know it's not top of the line (hence the lower rates), however...options are limited. The other option is Southwest and it's 3 times more expensive.

The flight is roughly 3-4 hours direct...

- What are your thoughts if you've used them?

- Also, how is it since COVID hit if you've used them since then as well?

Thanks!

If its for a vacation you are fine. I much prefer budget airlines direct flights over having a stop especially since I have kids.

Is it a daily flight? You need to know that if there's a maintenance issue the flight may be cancelled or delayed by days. My wife had one booked to go to a wedding and they flew on Friday's and Sundays. The Friday flight had a maintenance delay and they cancelled it, next flight wasn't until Sunday so she had to drive.

They won't rebook you on other airlines usually, or at least that's our experience.

I've flown spirit out of msy twice. Once to Boston and once to orlando( both in the last year). Both were fine and on time. They charge for water which kinda sucks but not a deal breaker. I prefer to spend most of my money having fun on the trip and not the getting there part so I enjoy the hell out of some low fares when I can find em.

Flew with Spirit about 8 times international in last 2 years. Alwayas on time. Never a real issue.

Watch AA and United always late or just canceled.

Southwest is good but not worth 3x to me.

I have not flown Spirit during COVID but I imagine it is similar to American or Frontier methods.

Book the front seats, for sure. Bring your own snacks/water.

The risk you run like someone else mentioned, they don't have a plethora of flights so if yours is delayed or cancelled you are usually SOL and have to re-book yourself on another airline, and deal with requesting a refund or get reimbursed for your new flight up to $X dollars.

It’s fine if you’re price sensitive and have a flexible schedule. As mentioned up thread, most destinations have a single daily or every few days flight, so if you hit a weather delay or maintenance, you can get stuck someplace for a few extra days. I emphatically would not fly them on international routes for this reason—I usually have to get back home for obligations and can’t waste 2-4 extra days while waiting for their next flight.

I've flown Spirit maybe 10 times, always opted for the Big Front seat, never made a connection, always one single segment.

They did fine for that small sample size.

It's a gamble for sure. And then it's essentially Air Greyhound. Be prepared to have an alternative plan if they cancel your flight and offer to reschedule on the next one 24 hours later

Up until about two years ago, Spirit had terrible reliability. And, as others have said, they don't have interline agreements with other carriers to book you if your flight gets canceled.

But, the last time I looked, Spirit's reliability had improved over AA and UA. It's a pretty well-run airline now. You just have to know the baggage rules and make sure that you don't get stuck at the airport paying extra because you weren't prepared.

Also, the seats don't recline at all, and that's so that they can pack more people in. I flew MSY-DEN, and that was fine, but that's honestly as long of a flight as I would want with Spirit -- just my opinion.

Flew Spirit to and from Detroit back in 2016. Had absolutely no problem; direct flight. Flight was on-time both times; bought my own bottled drink on the plane. Did pay a little extra to reserve my own seat (I need a window seat). Make sure to check in on-line and print your boarding pass in advance (easier and cheaper) also if you an get your bag size down to their "personal item" criteria of 18" X 14" X 8"(about the size of a backpack) you can save a few bucks:

Sat next to a nice older retired couple from Detroit on the way back; gave them a lot of tips on places to eat in New Orleans.

I have used spirt once on a non stop to Nashville. I carried on and got the big seat and honestly it was one of the more pleasant experiences I have had flying. I fly about a 30 times a year. Rolling the dice with them again in february on a direct to Cancun.
